“The Culling of 5000 Badgers”

Posted: 27 Feb 2013 06:42 PM PST

Somewhere in West Gloucestershire and Sumerset a pilot program has been authorized to kill 70% of the badgers in each area.
"Environment Secretary Owen Paterson told farmers at the National Farmers’ Union conference in Birmingham that he was committed to making sure the pilots went ahead.
He said tackling bovine TB had cost the taxpayer £500 million in the past 10 years, and costs could reach £1 billion over the next decade if the disease was left unchecked.
He said that research in the UK had shown that culling badgers, which can transmit TB to cattle, could reduce the levels of the disease in herds, and that Britain had to learn from experience elsewhere that the tuberculosis could not effectively be curbed without tackling the problem in wildlife."

So what the fuck does that have to do with LFC??? …I hear you ask.
The Culling of 5000 Badgers would have been a great Album Title for an 80s Heavy Metal Band… but for an LFC Blog?
Maybe I just wanted an excuse to use the word "badgers" in a title?
Maybe "The Culling of 5000 Badgers" was just more interesting than any of the alternative titles I'd thought up?
Maybe… there is actually a parallel for LFC in there somewhere?

If it please the jury, your lordship, I would contend that we've been seeing a bit of the old Badger culling going on at Anfield over the last few years…

For "bovine TB" read "lack of success" and it has become a worrisome disease that LFC has responded to by culling: first owners, then executives, then managers and about 5000 players by last count…
… but in the case of LFC… I'd suggest it is the actual culling, rather than the perceived "lack of success" that has been the self-inflicted disease which has "cost the taxpayer (LFC) £500 million in the past 10 years"

Warning! History Lesson Alert!
One of the proposed titles for this blog (prior to stumbling across an excuse to use the word "badger" in a footy blog) was…
"The first rule of Italian Race Car Driving: What's behind you does not matter."
(anyone who can name that movie gets a cookie)

Some of you have taken umbridge to my "constantly staring into our past while ignoring the present" and probably quite like the first rule of Italian Race Driving.
…but as a part-time dabbler in History… and while that was one of my fave movies and sayings back when I was the teenage owner of a muscle car, (cookie hint) …I also know that the saying "those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it" is so very, very often true.

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away…
David Moores owned an LFC that carried a perfectly acceptable and manageable £70 million in debt…
… He sold LFC to A Pair of Cowboys…
…The sale price: £270million
Within 12 months… LFC was £350 million in debt.

… now if Moores had taken out a loan for £270…
… not only could he have paid for the construction of a new stadium…
… but that loan would be mostly paid off now…
… and with Rafa still at the helm, I'd argue we'd be considerably better off on the field as well. (certainly no worse off than Arsenal… the trophyless, Top 4 Benchmark?)

Instead… Moores culled himself. Then G&H culled Parry. Then Purslow culled Rafa. Then the Banks culled G&H. Then FSG culled Purslow… then Hodgson… then Kenny…
…and a list of players that ranged from world class to wide-arsed along the way.
…all to the tune of countless millions in defaults, in Architectural drawings, in severance packages, down the drain.
Thus endeth today's history lesson.

We have a worldwide fanbase and that makes it diverse…
…and as such, the opinions of fans, on any number of LFC topics, are equally diverse.
There used to be a standard though… a benchmark if you will… that established what was acceptable discussion and what was simply "crazy bastard on a sopbox".
I no longer see that "standard".
Take offense at that if you will… some will feel compelled to, some will leap to it just to disagree with me.
… but at the very least, that "standard" has been lowered.

When G&H flirted with Klinsman and the news leaked… fans marched on Anfield.
When their financial shenanigans were laid bare, it prompted a fan-based, multi-fronted campaign to oust them that was unprecedented in football.
I doubt that Would have happened at any other club…
I doubt it Could ever happen again at "ours".

Now that's not to say "all is lost"… on the contrary… its just to ask the question…
Who and/or what is Liverpool Football Club?
It's a complex question… that elicits a different response among those who've followed the club for 3-5 decades, let alone between those fans and those newer to the club.
(For those who've been around a good long while… do you still recognize your club?)

I read a lot of comments around the web about Brendan Rodgers and his "new system of possession football".
There are those who pointed to the Zenit game and said, "there it is, that's what we're building towards".
… but that wasn't "death by football".
What we've been playing for about 2 months now, bares little resemblance to the footy we were playing in September and October.
StevieG is launching more Hollywood Balls in any given game lately, than Charlie Adam in a wet dream.

That's not a slam on Rodgers… just a call for those who feel the need to vehemently support him to do so honestly and fairly. (and likewise for his critics.)

Too many fans have already made up their minds about our current Manager.
I'm at a loss to understand fully where the evidence is to support such a decision…
… on either side of the fence.
We've seen his team against Zenit and Swansea, and even both games versus the current Champions, but we've also seen them against Aston Villa. We saw them at the start of the season, and we've seen them since the New Year.

It has been suggested that Brendan Rodgers is the New Shankly.
I don't think he is. I think Rafa was that…
…and given all that has occurred between his departure and Brendan's arrival…
I would suggest that "the next Shankly" is not even remotely what we need right now… …what we need right now… is the next Gerrard Houllier.
…and maybe Brendan Rodgers is (or can be) that?

"We are in a season of transition," we have been told.
That is what Houllier gave us… (although it was actually several seasons rather than one for the transition to take hold)
We have been a "team in transition" for a long time…
..from Evans team that won a Cup, to Houllier's team that won a Treble, to Rafa's team that went to 2 CL Finals, winning one, 2 CL Semi-Finals, a League Cup Final, an FA Cup Final…all in just 6 years…
…and since Rafa left… for 3 seasons we've been transitioning…
(maybe its been even longer than that?)
…It was clear to see what we were transitioning from and to between 2000 and 2008…
…so we didn't have to ask…
…But for a while now, when anyone has suggested a "season in transition" we should all have been immediately asking, "transition FROM WHAT… TO WHAT"?

The more recent culling of the squad to "balance the books" might very well have been necessary… but was the way we did it necessary?
And if it was necessary, one has to ask oneself if what the owners were looking to achieve with it in that time, is the same thing we fans were looking to achieve?

We've absolutely rid ourselves of high salary/low return players like Jovanovic and Cole and mediocre players like Poulsen and Konchesky…
… but we've also shed promising players like Meireles and Insua. (and that's without the experienced/and/or/class players we've lost recently)

We challenged for the title in 08/09 and by all rights we should have won it…
…even falling short, it should have been the stepping stone to the title…
… instead, since then, we have floundered in the league… finishing outside the "venerated Top 4" spots 3 years running… with a 4th most likely.
That seems weird when you stop to think about it. So much has happened since Rafa left, that it can't be only 4 years ago we had THAT team???

Archaeologists search for fossils and artifacts.
"Fossils" are the mineralized remains of plants and animals, whereas "artifacts" are man-made objects, such as stone tools, or pots.
BUT… the environmental setting in which these archaeological materials are found is called a "context".

The things we all find argument with… Downing is shit. Stevie is a legend. Jovanovic was a waste of space. Cole was a waste of money. Hodgson was an idiot. Rafa was a genius…
…these things are the "fossils" and "artifacts" of LFC discussion.
All that bollox that happened between Moores selling the club and now, (and yes… certainly there is plenty of context prior to that time also, like Parry's lack of marketing savvy.)… that was the "context".

… and its important to remember, or at the very least give fleeting thought to the context at play when forming any judgment of Brendan Rodgers, or where LFC currently is.

It is a context that must include the dire decisions of summer 2010… to fire Rafa, to hire Hodgson, to buy the likes of Konchesky and Cole.
…A stable and football-knowledgeable Anfield hierarchy would never have even remotely considered any one of those decisions… let alone all 4… at once!

We were sold Hodgson as the safe pair of hands that would stop the freefall.
Problem was… we weren't in anything even remotely like a freefall.
We'd stumbled slightly as a result of lack of investment to "take the next step".
Under Hodgson though, we immediately went into what was almost a catastrophic freefall, and it was in fact Kenny Dalglish that proved the "safe pair of hands" that not only arrested that freefall, but restored us to the "minus one" mark that we'd stumbled to in the final year of Rafa's tenure.

But the context for all of that was absolutely the boardroom farce that saw an all-in cage-match Battle Royale between G&H, their own MD, the Royal Bank of Scotland, John Henry …and some Chinese bloke who owned a pizza chain.

And it is for all those reasons, that I find it hard to compare LFC to Man United, Citeh, Arsenal, Chelsea, Spurs, or even Everton… let alone teams in other countries.
I understand why people want to, I just don't see the comparisons as legit…
Those used to be the teams that compared themselves to LFC, but they aren't the teams we can compare ourselves to right now… maybe some day soon we can again, but not now or in most recent times…

We have always considered ourselves to be the most "unique" of clubs… but to a very large extent since 2005 for all we've done right, we made ourselves "unique" for All The Wrong Reasons.
… and our travails of the last 3-7 years more closely compare us to the likes of Portsmouth and Rangers, rather than any Top, or even Middle Prem Club.

So here we stand at yet another Crossroads.
Another season without silverware (coz you know, last season's silverware was only pewter ;) )
Likely to finish yet another season outside the top 4

We are Bill Murry in Japan, Lost in Transition, hoping that Brendan Rodgers looks good in pink knickers.
(you're never gonna get that image out of your heads, no matter how hard you try. Your welcome. :) )

But that's the thing about the "context" and where we've been…
The "transition" back into the Top 4 isn't going to take 1 season. It can't when we are constantly selling to buy.
Our squad just isn't big enough or strong enough… and the competition have a headstart.
We desperately need a quality left back.
We desperately need a big, strong midfielder (in spite of having about 97 midfielders)
We need another striker.
We need a quality center back.
We need… We need… We need…
We need a quality left-winger, and a quality right-winger.
We need… We need…
…We need to ADD all of those to what we currently have, and not bring them in as replacements for the selling of Skrtel, or Agger, or Pepe, or the retiring Carragher, or ….. heaven forbid the Beyern rumors are true…

… that is the "transition" we are in.
And before we start contemplating replacing Brendan Rodgers "coz 8th isn't good enough" we better spare a thought for the "context" of such a decision…
… that FSG will not bring in a manager of the sort of steel and nerve the position requires, a Special One, a Rafa, a "insert your fave name here"…
… the "context" of firing Brendan Rodgers one year into his contract is that in all likelihood his replacement would be "a 2nd tier" Manager…

We know what Brendan Rodgers HAS been capable of.
We do not yet "know" what he IS capable of.
Not yet.
But I'd suggest we give him time to show us…
…and that the Owners provide the proper context" for him to "achieve" it…
… or the alternative won't be another "season in transition", it will be a BADGER…
…err… no it won't be a badger of course, that's just silly :) and an obviously shameless and blatant attempt to use the word "badger" one more time before signing off…

…it might be yet another "season in the wilderness" though…

“Happy Smiling People, Holding Hands…”

Posted: 04 Feb 2013 05:26 PM PST

Given the recent discovery in Leicester, and the general accusation of my being a negative miserable cunt, I was gonna title this blog "Now Is The Winter of Our Discontent, Made Glorious Summer…blah, blah, blah…"

… but it seemed the calls for me to stop being such an unbelievably miserable bastard, who must also be a rasict twat if I can't clearly see how fuckin BOSS Danny Sturridge's cock is, never mind his obviously innate abilities on the dance floor…
… I felt compelled to just change my outlook, turn that frown upside down, and go with the above title…

Some people seem invested in taking what I write and insisting that I'm anti-FSG, anti-Brendan Rodgers, and even on occasion, anti-LFC.

To clear things up, let me categorically state something I've categorically stated before (not that it'll make a blind bit of difference to some people, but as a reminder to the rest of youz… )

I'm neither pro, nor anti FSG.
I don't really give a fuck about John Henry, or Warner or anyone else that might be part of their financial group.
I am not an "FSG Supporter" I am a Liverpool Supporter… and that's how it should be.
I haven't bought a new rope with which to hang them.
I have zero agenda either for, or against them.
I want them to do right by my club… PERIOD… and that's about as far as my thoughts on them take me.

As such, I think everything they've done since purchasing the club (and that includes the manner in which they bought us… be that "saving us from administration" or simply "capitalizing on a very undervalued investment with a very broad and strong International Brand with an untapped revenue potential" … depending on your point of view,) is up for discussion.
They are not here to carpetbag us like G&H were.
But neither are they lifelong reds that came to our rescue out of a deep-rooted love for LFC, with a heart-held desire to see LFC WIN at all costs.
… and in the long run, maybe that position between the two extremes, isn't such a bad thing?

But, Their Record is there to be discussed…
…they've done some good things and made some good decisions…
… and they've done some not so good things, and made some very questionable decisions.
Maybe the problem arises simply because I think it is "THEIR job" to "get behind" and "support" all of US… not our job to "get behind" and "support them".
… and some seem to be suggesting the opposite… I dunno?

They have said they want to take LFC back to the top… and some of their actions seem to support that claim…
They have not said they want to do it in 2 years, 5 years, 10 years…
… and maybe that is where some of us part ways in our opinions of them, when judging some of their actions that do not seem to necessarily jive with those statements.

I feel some of their statements (and even actions since purchase) have been made as PR exercises to appease, and get us the fans on board with them and their regime… and to some extent, I can understand their need to do that, following on from the last lot…
… but really… some of their statements and actions have not (to date) really shown a dedicated adherence to making that happen…
…and some were simply ill-advised from the off. (the Nando-Carroll deal most notably.)

My making such a statement seems to prompt some people into suggesting I think they are the Devil incarnate, here to asset strip us … which is not only NOT even remotely what I'm suggesting… but is frankly a pretty stupid position to take.

They have purchased LFC… they own the club… and some day, be it a year from now, 10 years from now, whenever… they will sell LFC…
WE… ALL of US… we'll still be here.
So I'll watch what they say, and I'll watch what they do, and I'll judge them on both…
… We are Liverpool Football Club, not Fenway Sports Club.

I'm neither pro, nor anti Brendan Rodgers.
He is Liverpool manager and as such he has my support… but if you think that means his actions or statements can't be questioned, then we just think differently about our job as fans.
I am not calling for his head, never have done… in fact, I've said clearly and definitely more than once, that to do so is bang out of order… coz he simply hasn't been in the job long enough to make such a call or judgment.
But equally, I will not blindly support his every decision… that is as big a recipe for disaster as writing him off.
Again… Brendan Rodgers exists as LFC manager to serve US … not the other way around… and you know what… He himself has said as much.

Some people seem to have a problem with the notion of calling him a "mid-table manager".
I get it… it is a phrase that can be used as an insult.
But I've not used it as such.

Simply put… the best Premier League finish Brendan Rodgers ever had as a football manger was last year when he took Swansea to 11th place in the Premier League.
For a club of Swansea's stature that was a terrific accomplishment.
The previous season Brendan's Swansea finished 3rd in the Championship. They didn't win the title, they finished 3rd, gaining promotion to the Premier League via wins against Forrest and Reading in the play-offs.
Now I don't say that to diminish the accomplishment. Gaining promotion is hard, however you achieve it.
And for Brendan Rodgers, both achievements were terrific accomplishments.
…but I'm sorry, the highest he's ever finished is 11th…
…and he did it once…
… the greatest accomplishment on his CV to date is 11th place in the Premier League…
…so he IS by definition, a mid-table manager.

Now none of that is to say he can't achieve more than that, particularly at a bigger club like LFC.
Now none of that is to say he can't achieve more than that, particularly at a bigger club like LFC.
Now none of that is to say he can't achieve more than that, particularly at a bigger club like LFC.
(I've typed that 3 times, coz you just know someone is gonna try to twist that into "you're anti-Rodgers" :) )

I'm just trying to be objective here… as well as supportive.
Fact is, Gollum has finished higher in the Prem… and more often than once.
So has Steve fuckin Bruce and Tony fuckin Pulis.
I wouldn't want any of them at LFC, and rate Brendan's ability to eventually match and then supercede their "achievements"…
… but right now… just yet… he hasn't.

Now brace yerselves… :) …here comes the bit where I talk about Rafa and Kenny… probably coz I just can't help myself and am a broken record… stuck in a time warp, unable to look forward… but maybe, you know, its coz it might actually having some fuckin bearing on the subject.

People have accused me of some strange man-love for Kenny and Rafa.
Kenny has won league titles, as a player, as a manager, as both. (and a few cups too)
By definition, that makes Kenny a Top Manager.
Now yes, that was some time ago… but I see what he did in 18 months as "stopping the rot" that was the end of G&H's regime, and the CP/Hodgson debacle.
I see taking us from relegation spots to 8th, as a positive, and not falling below 10th, while taking 2 Cup runs and dealing with the January fallout, as "treading water" rather than failure or steps back.
I'm not blind to people's criticisms of his 2nd tenure… I just draw differing conclusions on where it suggested we were headed.

As for Rafa… well he wasn't even a mid-table manager when he went to Valencia. They took a bigger gamble on him than I have suggested we took on BR.
But he proved himself THERE… and when he came to US… well given who he had to beat to win those Spanish titles… he was unquestionably a Top Manager.

There are those that love to point towards him and say, "if he was any good, why has he been mostly unemployed since he left us?"
… as though no teams have offered him the job…
… this just displays ignorance of reality… the man has been offered countless jobs and turned them down… he didn't need to work, so he was choosey about where he went.
(although his judgment of where to go, when he did make a choice, is certainly questionable, coz both Inter and Chelsea were "hidings to nothing" in their own different ways.)

Now Brendan Rodgers… by definition of his career so far, is a mid-table manager.
And it would even be fair to say, that given LFC's slips in the table over the past 3 seasons, LFC are, by that same criteria of definition, simply a mid-table team.
So maybe we actually are the perfect match?
…And he may very well prove himself as more than "a mid-table manager" this season… and in doing so, prove that he was a very good choice to replace Kenny Dalglish.
(the logic though, does not "prove" that Kenny would not have achieved a similar mark had we stayed with him.)

That's the thing about where we are right now….
In-spite of any shortcomings LFC has right now, be they the result of past-foolishness, FSG's mistakes, Brendan's mistakes, poor buys, whatever…
Liverpool Football Club currently sit quite comfortably in the league… upper mid-table, but capable of so, so much more.

It's not where most of us would want… … but as always, a bit of luck here and there, and we would be higher.
It's not a position that was even remotely acceptable 4 or 5 years ago.
And that's part of "the problem" … for us, for Brendan, for FSG…
If we are no longer a Top 4 team… then by what means and on what schedule are we planning on getting back there???
(It hasn’t clearly been stated, and hints of intentions have been mixed.)

4th seems a bridge too far…. But 4th is actually quite achievable.
We're hitting a bit of form.
We've just hired a striker who looks the biz (let me just decode that for some of youz so you don't have to get out your decoder rings and that magic marker that makes invisible ink visible again – Sturridge is shit and a waste of money.)
…and he really could make the difference for us… maybe…
Given the fixtures that are left…. And the fixtures that "our competition" have on their roster…
…. Put a good run together and 4th really is ON.
… but…
… well my blogs are like MTV Rap videos… you knew there had to be a "but" didn't you? (negative, glass-half empy cunt… just when we were popping corks and toasting each other)
… but…
…we'll have to face “lower” opposition with the same sort of swagger we faced Citeh this past weekend…
… (and if it wouldn't be asking too much, do it for the full 90 minutes, eh lads.)

Do that… and Brendan Rodgers can prove he is more than a mid-table manager.
Do that… and Brendan Rodgers can silence his doubters (well, you know,) and prove he was a good choice last summer… maybe even go some way to, (I wouldn't say prove, but at the very least,) fully justify the decision made by FSG last summer.

Maybe then… we'll be able to all hold hands, sing cumbayah, (or, you know, YNWA, since we actually do have our own song) and all be Happy, Smiling People…
… abask in the afterglow of "a successful" campaign…
… unified in the opinion that we have re-amassed at the bottom of the hill boys and are about to commence charging back up the fucker.
"Made glorious summer by this sun of York; And all the clouds that lour’d upon our house.
In the deep bosom of the ocean buried. Now are our brows bound with victorious wreaths;
Our bruised arms hung up for monuments; Our stern alarums chang’d to merry meetings,
Our dreadful marches to delightful measures.
Grim-visag’d war hath smooth’d his wrinkled front; And now,–instead of mounting barbed steeds. To fright the souls of fearful adversaries,
He capers nimbly in a lady’s chamber… To the lascivious pleasing of a lute."
(a lute???? ;) Now that’s fuckin Cheery!)

… you know…
… until the transfer window opens and we can all start arguing about who's Shit, who's Ace, and how much money we should be spending, and what a cunt John Henry is…
… even though I haven't read a single opinion from any source even remotely suggesting such a thing. (though "There was always something, if you remember, in Willoughby's eyes at times which I did not like." … :) I'm getting literary as fuck on youz now.)

… but until that happens… have a read of Tomkins latest blog, a listen to the latest TAW episode (and the "Gray Area" blog) and a read of some of the latest offerings from the TIA lads…
… and realize that "definitive opinions" of where we are, and what we are, are a fool's game, as nothing is as yet "proven"…
… not even Sturridge's unbeatable, unplayable, amazing awesomeness! :)

“Demands of the Job: Part Deux”

Posted: 15 Jan 2013 04:28 PM PST

When Roy Hodgson welcomed Manchester United to Anfield in the 5th game of his tenure we spent the first 45 minutes defending with 10 men.
There was no attempt whatsoever to play the ball out from the back, and even in what looked like a policy of "clear the lines hoofball" there was little attempt to clear it to a red shirt upfield.
We went in 0-1 at half-time, and it could have been a lot worse…. 14 minutes into the 2nd half it was. We started as we'd left off and were 0-2 down.
Then something remarkable happened…
… we decided we'd had enough of that crap…
… we went at them, they made mistakes, and on 60 minutes we won a penalty which Stevie G scored, then he added a 2nd 6 minutes later.
United were rattled, their back 4 were looking shaky and making mistakes and their midfield looked all at sea.
Unfortunately, after clawing our way back into the game, we eased off a bit, and couldn't finish them off… instead Berbatov finished us off by completing his hattrick with the winner on 84 minutes.

Now some people would look at that game and see a dominant, title-contending Manchester United that simply showed its strength by scoring more goals than they conceded, or more simply… winning.

Me… I saw a Man Utd that aren't as good as their full-court press would have you believe, and have both midfielders and defensive players that either aren't as good as they used to be, or aren't as good as their reputations. (in spite of them losing the title only on goal difference.)

So I was more than a bit annoyed at the way we approached this first half, whether it was under direction, or the result of under-performing players, the result was the same… and almost carbon copy approach to this game as we took at home under Hodgson.
And as impressive as their strikeforce is, hence the belief some have in caution being the bets approach, their midfield and defense, just isn't all that great.
Now that's not to suggest that Man Utd players are shit… that's going to an extreme about 5000 miles down the road from what I'm suggesting… which is that they are simply not as great and unbeatable as is widely suggested or accepted.

… but… Great or Shite, simply good or not so much…
…Go to Old Trafford with the intention of defending for 45 minutes and trying to get to half-time 0-0 and… while that will occasionally work for a few teams… 9 times out of 10… you are basically fucked from the off.

I don't have a particularly big problem with the players selected for Sunday's game. It wouldn't have been my selection, but there was an argument for it.
I don't have a problem with the overall idea, when we face the big teams, of keeping it tight, playing it out from the back and maintaining possession…
… but I have no idea if that was the instruction our players had been given… coz a few looked like they were trying to do that, but other just didn't.
…and nor did those players look like they were looking to play it out and break fast.
Our approach just seemed completely disjointed…
… but ultimately it led to us defending in our own half for 45 minutes, barely getting the ball across the half-way line and even when we did, it was largely in the shape of a long ball to a player who had 3 defenders on him, with no one breaking forward in support, and going in at half-time 2-0 down.

I don't know if Brendan got it badly wrong, or his players just let him down. (there were 3 or 4 sub-par performances to point to and that's never gonna help.)
Either way, it wasn't an acceptable Liverpool approach/performance against Man United…
… just like that game under Hodgson.

A lot has been said about Raheem Sterling's selection. To be honest I wouldn't have picked him for this match, I'd have had him on the bench.
But then again, the idea of isolating Raheem Sterling to attack Fabio one-on-one, wasn't an entirely bad idea.
Unfortunately, in hindsight, Fabio had Raheem in his back pocket from the off.

Luis Suarez can handle Vidic and get the better of him.
Luis Suarez can handle Rio Ferdinand and get the better of him.
Luis Suarez can handle Patrice Evra and get the better of him.
Put the lad up against any two of the above three and he can even get the better of them occasionally…
… but all 3 at the same time (and with little support from midfield or his wide men)… they had him in their collective back pocket for 45 minutes.

There has been a fair bit of criticism of Downing for not trying to get past Patrice Evra.
It's a fair comment… Evra was constantly showing him the wing, and Downing seemingly refused to go there…
… but was that coz he's a pussy, coz he'd been told not to, or coz no one else was breaking forward, so even if he had gone there, there was no one to cross to?
(yeah, I know, its coz he's a pussy, :) but I'm trying to be objective)

I said to my mates before the game, we should go with a 4-4-2 (which could have morphed back and forward between that and a 4-4-1-1 or a 4-3-2-1) with Sturridge and Luis up top and one midfielder breaking into that support role.
They wouldn't have expected us to do that.
We could have nullified their "not that impressive" midfield and put their "frankly less than impressive back four" under some real pressure… (you know, like we did in the 2nd half.)

The saddest thing about Sunday… is simply that it confirmed to all and sundry that United are dominant and favorites for the title
… when it could have showed everyone just how truly unimpressive they really are.

The 2nd saddest thing is that it confirmed for many that we truly are nothing but a mid-table team right now…
… when it could have showed that there really is some promise in what Brendan Rodgers is trying to do… and by association… in the decisions that the Owners made last summer.

To be clear… in my opinion… in all honesty… it showed both.
…The first half showed everything that is wrong with the club.
…The second half showed the promise.

Now then… a bit of housekeeping…
Dear Mr. Sturridge,
I'm writing this letter to let you know that I was a bit of a cunt a few weeks ago. It wasn't that I thought you were shite or "not good enough for the Liverpool shirt" but I also wasn't convinced that you were what we needed.
Boy, have you proved me wrong in your first two outings. And I'm holding my hand up to say "you've converted me" and "keep it up lad".
I don't know if I owe you a formal apology, as such, coz its only two games and not full outings at that, but I did find an easy recipe for "crow in plum sauce" and I must say it was more than palatable.
Cheers
Aitch

(It needed to be said… :) )

It is massively early to comprehensively judge Sturridge on only 2 halves… (look at the difference between Allen in September and Allen now?) but fuck me if I'm not impressed with the way this lad has applied himself.
Not just his goals… I'm talking about the way he's looking for channels to run into, dropping back to receive the ball, running into space (and as important, space that makes sense) when others have the ball, and his all round basic hunger for the ball.
He looks eager to impress.
He looks to be on a similar wavelength to Luis Suarez.
He looks… well… so far, worth every penny of 12 million.

I'm actually really eager to see how their partnership develops… and if that will make a difference to the performances of Sterling, Borini… hell, maybe even Stewie (..er :) well, okay, maybe that's a pipe dream, but you get my drift).

So Norwich next, which should be, not only a 3 point banker, but an opportunity to do some much-needed renovation to our goal-difference.
… but could just as easily be yet another fuckin embarrassment…
… so start strong from the off… get Danny out there alongside Luis…
… and if you must tap it about, feel free to do so in bits, but get the ball forward to these two, and lets go 2-0 up first, coz I reckon they'll do the biz for us.

“Cheers to Mansfield Town… you gave us a scare.”

Posted: 07 Jan 2013 09:21 PM PST

I don't know how some of you will feel about the first part of this blog, but I feel compelled to write it just the same.

Mansfield deserved a draw…
There… I said it.

I think their whole approach to this cup-tie was excellent.
There are clubs in their position that would have simply got all "up-n-under" and made it a purely hybrid Sam Allardyce, meets Tony Pulis, meets Pub Team, physical battle…
… but Mansfield didn't do that.

Okay sure… they were physical… at some times, even direct…
… but they also spent large parts of that game trying to pass it around, in what our very own manager would describe as "possession based, death by football".

I've heard and read a fair number of opinions on that game… (and provide an analysis of our performance below) …but in unbiased terms, I reckon it was just a good game of football. (as good as it could be on a pitch like that anyway.)

The weather contributed to making their pitch a mess… but it actually looked like they'd tried to dry it out and clean it up, and make it playable… and put on their best face for the viewing UK public than can't even spell Mansfield, let alone know where it is…
…where there have been times in the past, when teams have deliberately watered pitches down, in an attempt to prevent "better" silky skilled players from higher league teams from "playing football"

How many teams have we faced since 1989?
How many of them… when a game against us represented a cash-cow… closed off 96 seats and placed the names on them?
Teams helmed by blokes with decades of experience in football have done fuck-all…
… but a team helmed by a 20ish blonde who looks like she should be on the arm of a footballer, or reporting about them from a SkySports desk, rather than actually running their fuckin team, did that.

So Cheers to Mansfield Town, and much Respect!

Our winning goal created an inevitable "shitstorm in a teacup" because of the player involved…
…and because of all I've just written, to be perfectly honest… there is a part of me that almost wishes Luis' goal had been ruled out and Mansfield had gotten their replay.
I think they fuckin deserved it over the 90 minutes.

… However unrealistic… and it is… there is a part of me that wishes he'd have turned around…
…and with the same fervor he waves his arms about and claims for handballs and penalties and protests his "onsideness"… he'd have waved the Ref down and said, "no, no… it was handball".

As I said… that is totally unrealistic…
Again to their credit, Paul Cox, the Mansfield Manager, himself said that it was just one of those things, and if it had been down the other end, he'd have taken it all day long.
One of their own Strikers, himself said, "if it gets me on the scoresheet, hay, I'd have taken it" or words to that effect.
… but I still wish we hadn't won that way…

Make no mistake though, as much as I wished the World were a place where honor and honesty ruled… I’m aware enought o know that it just isn't… shame but there it is… and as a result, the other part of me is glad to be past that oil-laden, banana skin and through the other side of it, where we can get back to …ah shit… facing Oldham on their patch….
Ultimately, we absolutely did not need the extra game, for sure… but we can't say that Mansfield weren't good for it.

From their nod of the hat to Hillsborough, to their approach to the game, to not only, their acceptance of the "controversy", but their stated opinion of it, Mansfield Town showed everybody in the world that the "Magic of The F.A. Cup" isn't some long-lost mythic tale of days gone by.
It would be gilding-the-lily in the extreme to suggest they single handedly put the luster back on that faded-glory of an idea… but when people refer to "the Magic of the FA Cup" …that tie was what they were referring to…
Plucky little non-league mining town… were "well up for it" and in their own little version of our own "great European Nights", gave the 5 times Champions of Europe a run for their money!

Pity the commentators and pundits couldn't show the same fuckin dignity, but that's commentators and pundits for ya!

… Maybe Suarez could consider paying for Paul Cox's Honeymoon?

For our part…
It was good to see Danny Sturridge so confidently take his debut goal for LFC.
It was less good to see his American Football end-zone dance in celebration of it.
You're at LFC now Danny not Stamford Bridge, lay off eh?
I was critical of his signing initially.
I was revising my position and softening to it by the time he'd signed.
… but I DID like what I saw of him on Sunday… and can see elements of what people who wanted him were on about.

As I said, I thought he took his goal very well.
He then got a bit cocky and allowed the keeper to get the better of him twice in the subsequent 30 minutes… they were chances he should have easily put away… but he looked a bit like the first goal had convinced him "this keeper is shit I'm on for a debut hattrick here" (to be honest, and in fairness to him, that's pretty much what I was thinking) and as a result, he was a little too casual in taking the other chances that came his way.

Some will suggest that's a bit harsh.
Maybe it is, but I don't think so… I'm just trying to analyze his debut.
What you absolutely want, in a striker particularly, is a bit of swagger.
All the greats have had it. An almost unshakable "I'm gonna score here and there's nothing you can do to stop me" mentality. Keegan had it, Kenny had it, Fowler had it, Nando had it and misplaced it, Luis has it, even though he often doesn't score. RVP has it Thierry Henry had it, Anelka and Drogba had it… etc…
…and Daniel Sturridge definitely looks like he has that "swagger" about him.
He's obviously not fit… he looked like a Joe-Cole-Two-Pack-a-Day-Man after about only 15 minutes of that game… so maybe its was more a case of him clearly not being fit and his physical "touch" to put them away not quite being there yet, as opposed to a mental issue.
But suffice to say, that little criticism aside, I'm now really looking forward to seeing Sturridge play alongside Luis Suarez… if these two can learn to play together… that could really be something to watch.

The rest of Our Bunch… what can I say… thought there were some pretty dour performances out there… particularly in the 2nd half… in spite of the bog of a pitch.

Overall, I'm a bit concerned with how badly some of Jonjo Shelvey's performances have dropped. And for me, this game was a microcosm of his season so far. Really terrific in spurts… he put Danny through for his goal and repeated that several times… but over the 90 minutes he faded in and out of the game, as he has done a number of times.

Joe Allen… what has happend to this guy… was he riding hype, is he just exhausted?
…coz he looks like shit over the last month or so…
I'm left wondering what he brings to the side sometimes. I know some love him, but if you wanted sideways crabcake footy, Lucas, Hendo and even Adam were capable of that. All our midfielders seem very similar to one another at times to me… For 15 million could we have gotten someone more in the Mascherano/Sissoko mold?? I don't think we have a physically imposing midfielder.
Lucas puts himself in there, as does Hendo and even Allen tries to… but its not the same as having someone who simply IS physical… and by that, I don't mean a bruiser, but someone who is physically imposing. To clarify… the Masch wasn't a particularly "big" lad but he played… or "went in" …big.
I’m honestly left wondering in some games if we’d have been no worse with Adam or Hendo next to Lucas and used the 15 million to get Studge in August??
The other weird thing about Allen, is that played Allen in Lucas role at the beginning of the season, with other players as the "playmaker"… but since Lucas returned, who has replaced him as a sub in every game? Henderson, with Allen roaming or pushing forward. So why didn't he just use Hendo there in the first fuckin place and play Allen further forward, or just not buy him?
I dunno, maybe a bit harsh on the lad and he’ll grow, but I wonder if he'll become a squad player, with us getting better players in midfield, if we are to progress. That'll probably be a controversial opinion… and I'm willing to admit I could be entirely wrong.
And I thought Hendo did really well, given that he had little support (in that they both had poorish games continually conceding possession, especially as the game wore on,) from Lucas and Allen.

I thought Coates had a dodgy game, (rumours he’s on the chopping block to be sold?) as did young Jack Robinson. And if you can't impress in a game like this??? …Of course, neither player has really been playing, which can't be helping.
And I thought Suso was a bit of a waste of space also. I know there's a terrific player inside Suso, I just know it. But we haven't seen it much lately. Against a team of Mansfield's level he should have been able to show it… pitch condition aside, but he really didn't.

Downing was all huff, with no puff… though he did deliver some fine balls into space that we didn't take advantage of… he’d have been on about 4 assists if our lads had played better… So I’ll give him a 5.5 out of 10… which is "Fuckin Great for Stewie", like :)
As previously stated, wondering a bit about what has happened to Jonjo Shelvey? He looked very promising last season and first part of this, but he’s been awful since we tried to turn him into a striker.
Wisdom was good and bad… it looked like it was his first game back from injury… so I'm giving him a pass overall.
Thought Carra was pretty solid, but started making some real howlers towards the end… you could see he was losing it, getting both nervous, frustrated and angry, by the way he kept bollocking players, even when they didn’t deserve it.
And credit to Jones for putting in a few very important saves, particularly as the defense in front of him began to wobble quite worryingly.

And then there's Luis Suarez…. little scamp… just when he was redeeming his reputation… he goes and does THAT (The Ref’s view was partially blocked, and the linesman simply HAD to see that… but given WHO it was… it makes you wonder how they came to the instant conclusion that it was ball-to-hand???)
I'm not big on crediting one player with results in a team sport… but I don't think it's a stretch to suggest we got through that tie because of him.
Ultimately, what matters is that we got through it…

… but Full Credit to Mansfield for giving us a game… and with it, a bit of a scare.

So that gives us 3 wins and 2 losses out of those 8 games I listed as "needing six wins" from… with the Mancs of The Evil Empire up next…
… and given that Fungus ordered up a whopping helping of Howard Webb and was immediately served it by the F.A. we'll likely be on 3 and 3 by next Monday…
… but it's a winnable game if we pluck up and get at them.

Its been said before about the Mancs, and its sounding a bit foolish to say it anymore… but they really are the poorest Manc side to sit top of the league. Without RVP, I think they'd be struggling it out for 3rd/4th… (but there again, where would we be without “a cheating racist Uraguyan”? ;) ) …so here's hoping the Van Penis gets Pneumonia this week, coz you can bet the fucker'll score against us.

Anyway, All the Best to Mansfield in their future endeavours…

For us… and I hope it wouldn't be too painful for them… if the Reds players all turned out for the pre-match kick-about at the Toilet in white t-shirts with a handprint emblazoned on them and the name Suarez… just to piss off the Mancs… think that'd be quite a larf…

…and In True Luis Suarez Scampy Fashion… I Fancy a 3-2 win for us. :)

“The Demands of the Job”

Posted: 18 Dec 2012 07:38 PM PST

When Rafa Benitez was forced out of the club, there was a name at the top of many people’s lists and it wasn't Roy Hodgson, Kenny Dalglish, or Brendan Rodgers.
It was Owen Coyle.

He’d gotten promoted with a Burnley side playing decent footy.
He’d kept playing decent footy in the Prem and kept them up.
Then he left them to go to Bolton, and took a side that basically played Stoke/Allardyce type footy and got them playing like… well, like Burnley, (who were almost immediately relegated.)

Coyle took a bruising up-n-under Bolton side, got them playing decent footy, in a very comfortably upper mid-table bracket, and even took them to an FA Cup semi-final.
Coyle’s name was being lauded throughout England. He even won a few manager-of-the-month awards.
His style and his personality were praised, and in hushed (and not so hushed) tones he was being linked with managerial posts at the top clubs in England.
This included a significant enough number of our own fans wanting Owen Coyle to replace Rafa Benitez.

Then it all went pear shaped.
Bolton went down.
..and languished at the bottom of the Championship… whereupon… Owen Coyle was fired by Bolton.
Now the odd thing is… the clamor from Premiership clubs for his services disappeared. And I'm not talking about Arsenal, United, Chelsea or Liverpool… I'm talking about teams that regularly change their manager (oops… I actually am talking about Chelsea and Liverpool, but I think you know what I meant.)

Now please understand…. This IS NOT an anti-Brendan blog. It isn't.
I stand behind him. I continue to support him as Liverpool Manager. And I think calling for his head right now is Bang Out of Order.

And I’m not comparing Brendan Rodgers to Owen Coyle directly… but really, prior to coming to LFC, Rodgers achievements last season were no greater than were Owen Coyle’s 4 or 5 years ago.
The big argument (from most) for giving Brendan the job was not what he had done at Swansea, but what he could perhaps do with "His Swansea system"… at a bigger club with more resources and a better group of players.
… the important part of that being “more resources and better group of players”.

but simply put… it was a big gamble …coz he doesn’t really have either.
Sure it could be argued that he’s got half a dozen players that are "better than Swansea" players… but the rest of the squad is nothing but inexperienced potential and faded glory at this point… exactly the kind of squad "you'd expect to see at a Swansea".
(caveat: we "could" be better than that description, but right now, we just aren't.)

In a lot of ways I feel sorry for Brendan. He was offered a poisoned chalice.
But this is the crux of the problem now…
Imagine for just a moment if Rafa, after having battled on all fronts for 5 years, had just stuck it out for a few more months?
Not coz he was the bee-all-end-all of football management… but because he KNEW football, so did all the people in the various coaching positions throughout the club, his assistants, the Reserves, the recently restructured academy.
The 3 guys that didn't know footy… John Henry, Tom Werner, and Christian Fuckin Purslow. (Ian Ayre knows footy, but he's not a "footy man", he's just a businessman who knows a bit about the game.)

The result of that decision was some very serious short-term damage… but even at that, it could have been reversed.
But it wasn't reversed. FSG didn't know enough about football to know that they had just bought a football club that wasn't being run by football professionals.
They didn't know enough to realize the guy that got fired was the guy that should have stayed… the guy whose advice they so sorely needed…
… and that the guys remaining… the guys advising them about all matters football… actually knew fuck all about football (and as has certainly been proven… what makes a good football player.)

Instead of an organization with a solid structure of footballing knowledge base…
… they got an organization run by two guys with game controllers in their hands and competent scores on Fifa pro.
… and Roy Hodgson…

In all honesty… I felt sorry for FSG for about 6 months… but I think they've had ample opportunity to learn the realities of the Premiership and football in general, and even more specifically what LFC is (or should be) all about… and simply put…
… they haven't… they just haven't.
They've been like a small, silver metal ball-bearing, lumbering from bumper to bumper in a pinball game… scoring a hit on the 1000 bumper once or twice, but mostly hitting the 100 bumper, and slipping between the flippers.
And so… instead of correcting mistakes… they've continued to make them… compounding the initial damage while adding damage all of their own doing.

If they want on-field success then they need to get their shit sorted and right quick.
If however, they just need a solid, upper-mid-table asset with a decent financial turnover, then it's us fans that need to get our shit sorted and come to terms with top earners leaving the club, to be replaced by promising youngsters, who will eventually be sold on for a profit…
… like fans of the Once Mighty, European Cup winning, League Topping Aston Villa… a fallen giant, who can still occasionally go to a top club and beat them 3-0.

Their first transfer window saw them sell 2 players for £58 million and buy 2 for players £53million.
Their second transfer window saw them offload 38 players to bring in 9 players for £120 million
Its fair enough to complain about the value we got for that money… but it fuckin annoys me no end when people ignore the 38 player exodus that financed the "£120 million spending spree". Some dead weight on ludicrous wages went in that window… but some promising young players and a certain Raul Meireles went also.
Its also annoying as fuck to see blame laid on one person for what was clearly an institutional collection of fuckups.
(I'm referring to all decisions and players there. I don't know what we pay Downing, but I'm fairly sure we'd have been better off paying some of it to Raul to keep him here.)

In the same way, whatever the actual ins-n-outs of the Dempsey saga… I'm pretty sure it wasn't all Ayre's fault.
We inquired about Siggurdson, then fucked him off for the price tag and wage demands. (supposedly)
We inquired about Dempsey, then fucked him off for the price tag and wage demands. (supposedly)
Yet, we spunked £11 million on Borini who's initial price tag was (according to Jenn Chang) less than £8million. (and rose due to rumor leaks as opposed to any real valuation???) (supposedly)
And £15 million on Allen whose initial price was £12. (supposedly)

So what the fuck is our transfer policy?
We won't be held to ransom for a player?
Or
We'll gladly overpay for one?
And whose decision was it to let Andy go? Coz there seems to be some conflict on that as well?

I know some always want to wade in with "Dempsey isn't pulling up trees at Spurs" or "Andy has been injured all season at Wet Spam" or "Gylfi couldn't score in a brothel with a case full of cash"
And there's some validity to such comments… individually they are discussion to have…
But it does cloud the discussion of what was behind the decisions at the time.
We courted Dempsey, we tapped him up… it wasn't a case of Ayre hopping on his bike and doing an Easy Rider when he should have been working the phone.
And frankly I think that has bearing on the "buy British policy" and the decision to spend £35million on Andy Carroll, or value Downing at £20 million, or let a £6 million Charlie Adam leave for only £3.5million to the first bidder… and NOT see the value in the likes of Demba Ba or Michu before anyone else did.
… coz you know… our current targets are Thomas Ince and Danny Sturridge?
Our "tranfer policy" and just Who is in charge of it are unanswered questions.
January should be quite interesting?

So to return to my opening point…
…decisions have been made and we went from a proven Winner of top trophies, to a proven winner of 3rd tier trophies and mid-table security, to a semi-retired Winner of top Trophies, to a Bloke that did alright in Wales.

That might be terribly unfair on Brendan Rodgers… but in all honesty we simply do not know if it is or it isn't.

A frustrating element of recent results… wins, draws and embarrassing loss… is the manner of the performances… in that… after initial progress made in implementing "possession football" even when results weren’t going well, it appears that Rodgers has somewhat turned his back on what he was trying to achieve…
…. And he now seems to have reverted back to the core of the squad from last year, playing quick, long balls up to the forwards…er forward… er midfielder masquerading as a forward…
Only one player from the side that started against Aston Villa was a Brendan Rodgers sigining… Joe Allen.
So for all the drum-banging trumpeting of a youth policy playing total/possession/death-by football… in terms of the sides development… have we now stalled?
(and did we perhaps need to, in order to progress beyond the weak start?)

Where was Assaidi against Villa… surely it makes more sense to play this kid against a weak Villa defense given that he did reasonably well against a fairly strong Udinese defense?
Adam Morgan was the sole striker against our pre-season opposition, and was given a run out in early Europa games… if you want to see what a kid can do… in a side that has only one recognized (sort of) striker… surely the defenses of Aston Villa, Sunderland, Southampton, Reading and QPR, are where you find out?

Nah… fuck that… put Downing at left-back and bring Cole off the bench to change a game…. Whatever you do, don't have Suso or Pacheco handy on the bench… 3 defenders makes more sense???
I'm trying to give Brendan the benefit of the doubt… it is very early doors yet… but fuck me lad.

And someone explain this to me…
When Lucas was injured we played Allen in the holding role… not Henderson.
…and when Hendo did get a game, it was either alongside Allen, or pushed in front of him.
But in the two games Lucas has played… the player who replaced him from the bench has been…err…. Henderson… with Allen playing further forward.

Ah shit… that sounds very Anti-Brendan… and I don't mean it to be… as much as I'm trying to "stay all cerebral" about where we are… I'm feeling as frustrated as many of you are.
(Although there are a few that continue to fly the "4 bells and all's well" flag. Kudos to youz even when I do disagree.)

I think we made a big mistake firing Kenny.
I think we put all our money on the green zero when we hired Brendan.
Maybe it'll prove one helluva a bet and bring in the big rewards that such bets sometimes do???
I hope so… I hope I'm proved wrong on both points… I really do.

We simply do not have a choice but to hold fast and "let it ride" now.
Another managerial change at this juncture or in the summer (unless the wheels really do come off in spectacular fashion) could be catastrophic, in a way that will eclipse our previous 3 managerial changes.

The owners need to back Rodgers, and buy who he wants… regardless of a million here or a million there.
And get our targets sorted. No more promising youth, we need proven players.
Rodgers responsibility is to pick the right targets (if he's the one doing so.)

It was all well and good as a financial philosophy cutting Kuyt, Bellamy and Maxi… and even Carroll… from the wage bill…
… but cutting them from the squad (the team actually rather than the squad, which makes it even worse) without competent replacements, was unforgivable and frankly criminal.
Assaidi and Borini were players you ADD to the above names, not replacements for them.
It is part and parcel of why we are where we are.
Goals left… and they never came in.

And AS important … we need to show the "top players left in the squad" that they haven't made a mistake extending their contracts.

For those keeping score…

Our reality is…We’ve played 29 games so far and we’ve got the same number of wins as the last 29 games last year, the difference is 4 draws more and 5 goals less scored.
…and that playing the "much vaunted possession" style of play that was supposed to make all the difference from last year… the style that people would be "happy to see regardless of results"
…and yet two things remain unchanged…
…the on-field outcome remains largely unchanged…
…as it appears do the (albeit yet muted but beginning to grow) calls for a manager's head.

2 blogs back, I listed 7 fixtures as "not too many games that could not be described as a must win" They were Reading, Anzhi, Everton, Swansea, Newcastle, Anzhi, Chelsea…
… they yielded 2 wins, 3 draws, 2 Losses

In the last blog I listed the next 8 fixtures, reiterating the suggestion that most of them were "must win". They were Wigan, Young Boys, Swansea, Spurs, Southampton, Udinese, West Ham, Aston Villa…
… they yielded 4 wins, 2 Draws, 2 Losses

I'm hoping that trend continues, coz the next 8 fixtures are:
Fulham(h) Stoke (a) QPR (a) Sunderland (h) Mansfield (FAC-a) Mancs (a) Norwich (h) Arsenal (a)

… in my opinion, we need at least 6 wins out of that lot…
…or its gonna be a long season

“Un – titled”

Posted: 18 Nov 2012 04:35 PM PST

by Aitch

NB: Post written before Saturday’s win over Wigan.

I'm not really sure where to start this blog.
I'm trying to get over being "comfortably numb" but with each passing week of the campaign, the numbness sets further.

I'd love to get excited over something… you know, besides naughtyschoolgirls .com… but I just don't seem to be able to.
I need some footy viagra or something.
Some sort of pill or perhaps sports drink, that will keep me excited for four months, but come with a warning to seek medical attention should I find myself still sporting footy wood come May.

And I know it's not just me. I've read similar comments on various MBs, and the 200 emails per week I used to exchange with my mates, discussing all manner of LFC related issues, has now dwindled to a meager trickle, that is largely driven by a weekly results predictor league we continue to engage in, with barely any post-match analysis, player rating, or general comment.

I'd love to have the passion of opinion, on any of the pros or cons of LFC 2012, that I have had with previous incarnations of the club… but I just don't right now.

I hear people waxing lyric over our newfound passing system, and I think… what?
Have we not always been a passing team?
Did you not watch us under Rafa?
Did you simply choose to ignore (consciously or otherwise) Kenny's first 12 months and concentrate only on whatever that last 6 months was?
… or even the almost complete ignoring of how often we seem to be carelessly and in many cases, needlessly giving the ball away in this new "possession centric passing game".
But I find myself not really caring to make such an argument.

And I hear people talking about how good we're playing now and how a striker would solve all our ills.
… but we've actually created fewer goalscoring chances than at this point last season.
… he says making an argument…

"Ah but we're creating better chances" I actually read one lad argue in another forum.
Which is a bit strange considering we'd hit the woodwork about 15 times at this point last season, and have only done so 4 times this campaign… so in actual fact, not only are we creating fewer chances, but our shooting accuracy is deteriorating also.
… which is once again, engaging in the argument…
… but I hardly feel like pressing these or any other points these days.

Let me interject here and state categorically that this is in no way an attempt to convey a message of discontent with the current manager.
At this point, as at the moment of his hiring, I continue to be 100% behind Brendan Rodgers and what he is trying to do.

My first few entries as guest blogger in Gerry's absence caused a few ruffled feathers
Okay, they asked pointed questions… about the club… and of the fanbase… but while we've gone through considerable change since then, I'm not convinced yet that it is considerable improvement to be honest.

We are in the virtually same League position as we were 2 years ago under Hodgson..
…granted we aren't spending 45 minutes camped out in our own half against the Mancs, or considering a point at Birmingham some sort of "historic result or achievement…
… And I hear all the hope, and recognize the signs that point to the potential for progress as the season continues…
… but I don't yet see anything that suggests that as a likelihood we can count on.

For my money, LFC's situation is as much in-flux as it was.
And for all the "mistakes of the past" …frankly… we've continued to make mistakes in the now.

In some ways the club is now "more stable" since the new owners are actual businessmen, rather than cigar smoking pretenders to that title.
But I am under no illusion that John Henry and Co bought us for no other reason than that we were an undervalued asset which could be stabilized fairly easily, and flipped at some point for a profit.
I'm seriously at a loss to understand why anyone thinks otherwise?
And on many levels, I suppose that's fine… but we've ceded any pretense of a title challenge, and much pretense of an actual top 4 challenge in the process.
Too many in our fanbase, in lauding this idea of a "self-sustaining club" seem to be ignoring what that means in terms of practical league position and squad personal… especially when starting from the "depressed position" we were in.

In their first transfer window they made a "statement of intent".
All I can say about that is "thank fuck Luis Suarez was part of that statement, coz every other word of it was a fuckin disaster."
…and frankly… the "statement" was a bit of a boondoggle really.
Maybe it wouldn't have been had they spent better, or more wisely… but it is what it is… and what it was, was a boondoggle… riding on a sea of euphoria over the "just in the nick of time" termination of G&H's disastrous regime and the headlines of "record signing"… it looked for all the world like we were back and competing.

But we weren't… we sold a piece of the family's best silver to do those deals. There was no investment from the owners.

In the subsequent transfer window they again made what many thought to be "a statement of intent".
…120 million quids worth.
Impressive… but that figure obscured for many the actual numbers …which involved 30+ players leaving the club to finance that shopping spree.
And again… the failures of the new signings are there for all to see and argue about incessantly… and boy do we all love such arguments…
… but it conveniently steers us from looking at the men behind the curtain… who once again sunk none of their own money into the transfers… player sales, tv money and sponsor revenues covered the deals.
Decisions certainly could have been better. Money better spent. But it wasn't.

And only one man paid the price for decisions that were made not by him alone, but by committee of him, Comolli, Ayre and FSG.
I know some people don't want to hear that.

The voices blaming Rafa were loud and clear… but we now KNOW beyond doubt that the poor bastard was crawling through a sewer of bullshit during his time at the club…
… that he kept us competitive for all but one season is testament to his ability…
…but people chose to look only at his final season.
Some continue to do this to this day… and call themselves… well… I won't go there.

I remember a discussion with a good friend of mine at the time.
He wasn't particularly anti-Rafa, but he had at that point allowed all the anti-Rafa arguments to sink in enough to the point where he had simply concluded that perhaps Rafa needed to go for the good of the club… coz we needed unification.
While I disagreed with his conclusion, I accepted how he had come to it…. how could you not at that point…
…but I suggested that it wasn't Rafa that was dividing us… it was G&H and all their shenanigans… with Rafa the one without a seat when the music stopped.
He now accepts the folly of that decision… and the road it has led us down.

Now bare with me here… coz I need to make a point about Kenny to get us current.

I know I'll not change anyone's mind about Kenny Dalglish.
I think as much as with Rafa, there's little to no middle ground with Kenny.
Hodgson should never have been thought about, never considered for the position, and anyone who thought it was a good idea should frankly be embarrassed. When England fail in their endeavours, he will be fired and immediately hired by whatever mid-table club needs to stay mid-table, or whatever 3rd rate foreign team thinks he might be able to give them a shout at a title in a Championship grade league. That is who he is. Like Allardyce, like Curbishley, like "insert name of managers who are always employed below the surface" here.
Hodgson's dismissal was righting a ludicrous wrong.
But like Rafa, you either think Kenny's dismissal was a mistake, or you think it was the right thing to do.

Understand… it is not that I don't understand the arguments for Kenny's dismissal.
I do.
I just don't think they outwayed the arguments for allowing him to continue.
And more importantly I think the decision set precedent for the current manager.

The man was in charge for 18 months. The football we played in that time was successful for 12 months and "unsuccessful" (coz cups don't count) for 6 months… and so he had to go.
Under his stewardship (completely ignoring the DoF experiment) we wasted 120 million in the transfer market…. So he had to go.
Under his management the quality of football went backwards in the last 6 months… confirming the hypothesis that it would continue to regress into this season… again ignoring victories over Stoke and Everton en-route to the FA Cup Final, and a 4-1 romping of the Chavs.

Again… I'm not discounting the utter shame of losing embarrassingly to Swansea in the last game of the season… what I have a problem with is the ignoring of the games mentioned above, and as many others for every negative result/performance, in order to draw the conclusion that we were regressing unequivocally and therefore a change was needed.

I do think a change was needed. In fact, I think 2 changes were needed.
First… the removal of Damien Comolli as DoF and the termination of that experiment… Second… the replacement of Ian Ayre as Top Executive.
Ayre was a fine transitionary appointment from the debacle that was Christian Purslow… but he's a fuckin lightweight of a CEO (in and of himself, let alone in comparison to the Execs at other top clubs.)

Which brings me to where we are.

The change was made.
Brendan Rodgers was installed… and the DoF was scrapped.
Sounds good.
Ian Ayre kept his job… which was not so great… (but I will concede that given the number of heads that rolled in the summer, we needed "some" stability, so maybe that justifies saving him?)

I gotta say that regardless of how well or not "certain players" did last season… the almost cynical culling of Kenny's signings was slightly alarming…
… not coz they were world beaters… but simply coz we didn't really "replace" them with players who were clearly and unequivocally better.
Some will want to argue that X player is better than Y player… the arguments are there to make for and against all exiting and entering players… but the fact is… only Joe Allen was considerably better than the player he directly replaced (either Spearing or Adam depending on your point of view).

And again, don't get me wrong, I like the look of some of the new lads. Assaidi for instance looks promising, as does Sahin (though we only borrowed him.)
…And I love that we are promoting kids… but you get what you get with kids… real talent shown occasionally, brain farts of concentration lapses shown also… and inexperience of decision making…
… and then there's the burnout factor.

Andre "Norman" Wisdom has to be one of the best right backs we've produced since Rob Jones. He has looked immense in some games. But he's also looked really tired in the last few.

As much as I love watching Sterling, defenders have seen enough of him now to know that you double-team him, you don't let him get a run on you, and if necessary, you simply muscle him off the ball… I fear for his continued fitness… and that is a two-pronged fear…
…first…in that young players are still physically developing and can easily be ruined by the weekly intensity of the prem (let alone getting called up midweek for England… seriously… there were no senior players, so you had to call on a kid???)…
…and second… in the likelihood of some fuckin thug like Shawcross simply twatting him so as not to look like a nutmegged dickhead.

And even the revelation that is Joe Allen has looked a bit dodgy the last couple of games.

While some of these lads do look like they might be able to last the season… we've already seen a few of the others clearly show they can't be relied on for 38 + the cups.
How much better would it have been to hold onto Spearing to give Allen a break in the Carling Cup for instance?

And so to the "bit of a poisoned chalice" that I think Brendan Rodgers has been sold.

It was my one defense of Roy Hodgson.
He was sold the LFC manager's job, and probably promised all sorts of players and control… who wouldn't take it? Then when he got here, he probably thought… "fuckin 'ell, this is what Benitez was dealing with? These guys are fuckwits. No wonder he "had a rant" and "left by mutual consent."
(he was still a fuckin pratt, mind you J )

The 2012 Summer's business can't yet be classed a clear cut failure…
… we singed a few good young lads. If they fulfill their promise, there's a squad to build on… but they must be given more than one season to prove themselves…
… but build on it we must.

Say what you want about Clint Dempsey. He would have been a very useful tool.
And useful tools often cost 6 million.
I don't give a fuck about all the he said-she said that has been printed about that transfer…
What I "know" is that FSG posted an article on their own website announcing his signing in July. So they MUST have been more than marginally interested in buying him.
…meaning this was NOT a last minute cock-up.

The price at that time was being rumored at 10 million quid.
A good friend of mine rates Dempsey quite highly. He was a happy camper when that "rumor" surfaced. And we subsequently had a discussion about his acquisition.
He argued we needed him. I argued he'd be useful, but not at 10 million. Maybe if we could get him for between 4 and 6 million that would represent good business, especially with the TV show and U.S. shirt sales to consider. He agreed.
So there it was. In July… Dempsey for 6 million. Fair Enough.
Then we fuckin haggled them and rejected 6 million???
Just exactly how much did they think he was gonna cost when they posted that article in July??? He was their leading goalscorer for fucks sake.
He was never gonna cost less than 6 million.
Whatever the "truth" of this saga… someone… somewhere… got it badly wrong.
Some blame Ayre. Some FSG.
And frankly… questions have to be asked about this idea that Brendan demanded transfer say over a DoF system, yet basically didn't have say over this deal and the Carrol loan that was perhaps part of it?
Not because of those deals… but because it speaks to any future transfers.

To clarify my point…
Any judgment of Brendan Rodgers… and there is going to be judgment… must include this continued backstage wrangling…
… the fuckin bollocks we thought we'd left behind us when G&H were ousted…
… but which has proved, with every transfer window, to be still a big and continuing part of our incessant tendency to fuck-up!
(I await a call requesting a private meeting with Jackie Chan wherein I'll be "warned" to ease up on FSG, or else)

We must back Brendan Rodgers. We must back him 100%.
6 months is not enough to judge. 1 season is not enough to judge.
These time-frames 'inform" our opinions… but if such information is used to conclude that "he's not good enough" and we make yet another managerial change in the summer, then be under no illusion… we will be lucky if we are in the position of getting one last chance to "get it right" …or be mired in mid-table for a decade.

Whatever BR's plan is… we must stick to it… but part of sticking to that plan… is investment.

If we are to be nothing more than a "self-sustaining" club… then we will not win the Prem.
We are starting from too eroded a position… and we now have too many "rivals" trying to buy it.
If we are to be nothing more than a "self-sustaining" club… then a Top Four finish is going to be increasingly out of our grasp… certainly in terms of finishing there season after season… since the competition is stronger for those spots… and the competition for the 5th through 8th spots is also stronger.
If we are to be nothing more than a "self-sustaining" club… then cup wins, let alone runs, will be increasingly rare.

Ask yourself… what club outside the "top 5 or 6" has consistently… consistently… run to at least the semi's of one or both cups, every season?
Or even 3 out of 6 seasons.
The answer is… Not many.

This is the position we are now in. And the fault does NOT all lie at Kenny Dalglish's door.

And the fault does not all lie at FSG's door either. They picked up a company in great disrepair. That is what they do.
G&H were like Bain Capital … people who strip mine companies of its assets… then sell off what's left, or bankrupt it if that is more profitable.
FSG will eventually flip us. But flippers make money by improving the asset to be worth more than it was.
Unfortunately for us… we weren't worth much.
Fortunately for them… we weren't worth much, so they've already made us worth more.

What I mean by that is…LFC's worth existed in its salvage, rather than in what it was. Coz G&H left us in more disrepair than any of us really knew… even those of us with too much fuckin time on our hands, who troll the internet for any tidbits of information we can get about these matters.

LFC's worth is in its "global brand" and that "global brand" is worth only what it's "global appeal" is.
But it's a Catch 22…
…coz your "global appeal" is based on winning things.
Yes that means the Prem and the CL… those are the big ones… but the small cups keep you relevant too. The ones that don't matter are still "Finals" and "Finals" are "Big News" … broadcast to a worldwide viewing audience…
We need to be in them AS we work our way back to the top…. To stay relevant … To attract talent… To make us more competitive, so we CAN work our way back to the top.
These things are stepping-stones to success, rather than success themselves… but they count in the march to success.

This is gonna require investment… beyond a "self-sustaining" 30-40 million per window.
And we have few precious salable assets left… Suarez, Pepe, Agger, Skrtel…
Can we afford to lose any of them… really?
(Amid rumors of a bid for Suarez, I'm more concerned that it'll be Pepe leaving us in January.)
If we were still comfortably "top 4" and selling and replacing… that would be one thing…
… but we're not…
We're a team that finished 7th, 6th, and 8th and is currently in 13th place with 12 points from 11 games… and with our next game against 14th placed Wigan.

I am behind Brendan Rodgers… and anyone even remotely thinking about a managerial change at this point needs to check that shit, big time, stow their fuckin wishy-washy, lean which way the wind blows, not good enough for mentality and get the fuck on board.

Analyze what your seeing.
Criticize decisions.
Rate players.
By all means analyze and rate Rodgers… but do us all the courtesy of agreeing that he absolutely MUST get what Kenny did not… regardless of results, or league position… TIME.

I am not particularly impressed by our passing stats, nor our possession stats.
I'm not particularly sold on the idea that "this system" will work.
But I do recognize that we do not have the players (or not enough of them anyway) to properly implement this system to any real effect just yet.

If you think Lucas would have made a difference, you're right. But I seriously doubt it would have made a 12point difference.
The same can be said of buying Dempsey or keeping Carroll.

But all 3… fit and available each week?
Maybe, just maybe, that could make a 6point difference or even a 9point difference.

We need a helluva lot more than just "a striker in January".
This squad still needs a top striker, 2 top wide players, at least a 2nd tier DM, a quality "hole player" and a fuckin Top Quality LEFT BACK… coz Enrique ain't it, and neither is Johnson… and while Robinson might be "a little engine that could" and could become a good left back, he's not even on the same level as Wisdom over on the right.

That's six players… and not Borini's or Assaidis… we need better than that…
…Get those and we'd have a "decent squad that could consistently compete" for the top ¼ of the Table… regardless of manager.

Until then…Brendan will keep huffing and puffing.
He'll keep the lads passing and passing… and passing… and passing… (…and passing… sorry couldn't resist)
… and maybe occasionally we'll switch to probing… and win a few.
And earnestly… the kids will try their best, and sometimes that'll be good enough, and sometimes that won't.
And hopefully, enough of the senior lads won't decide "fuck this I want Champions League" and Brendan will be able to ADD to them, rather than REPLACE them.

Until then… we'll "expect" to pick up 3 points against Wigan, when realistically, we no longer have the right to such "expectation".
…we'll "expect" to bag 3 points against Young Boys, when they've just showed that such an "expectation" would be, at the very least, ill-advised.
…we'll "expect" January signings of strength and note… and not at the cost of an established pro… when we've been given little evidence to suggest that will transpire.

…we will Hope that…
… Luis stays fit and suspension free…
… that Sterling doesn't get injured…
…. that Wisdom doesn't burn out…
… that Allen finds his consistency again…
… that SG is still capable of more than 1 good game in 3…
… and that whatever Enrique is eating or drinking, he continues to eat or drink it, (same for Jamie C.) J
… and we will hope that somehow, Brendan finds some precious points from somewhere, be it Wigan, Swansea, Spurs, Southampton, West Ham, Aston Villa… with at least one of Young Boys and Udinese, a must win, in there too.

Those are the next 7 matches… (5 league games… 2 Europa Leagues.)

To end the last blog I listed our upcoming fixtures and premised that it didn't contain too many games that weren't "must win"
Reading, Anzhi (EL), Everton, Swansea (LC), Newcastle, Anzhi (EL), Chelsea
2 wins, 3 Draws, 2 Lost

We NEED to fair better in the next 7 than we did in that 7.
The thing is… I used to always have "confidence" we would… now I only "hope" we do.
And some of you will think that hope is a good thing, perhaps the best of things.
I want to side with you, I really do, but at the moment, I'm a Red and I think hope might be a dangerous thing to have in a place like this.
(see what I did there? J )
