Return of the Spice Boys

HULL, ENGLAND - Sunday, December 1, 2013: Liverpool's captain Steven Gerrard celebrates scoring the first goal against Hull City during the Premiership match at the KC Stadium. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Well, I did predict a 3-1 score line at Hull didn't I? Bloody hell, what a load of rubbish. To concede 3 goals at Hull is something else. They hadn't scored more than one goal at home all season and this was the first time they have beaten Liverpool, ever. The performance and result is unacceptable and really, the manager and players should be ashamed of themselves. We're not in European competition so the coaching staff and players can train all week and prepare and focus for the upcoming league game. We had 8 days to prepare for this game so you would think everyone would be well up for it. Sadly that just wasn't the case. The players showed less enthusiasm than a dog being taken to the vet. We were poor all over the park and got what we deserved, an embarrassing defeat.

After the game Brendan Rodgers bemoaned the loss of Sturridge and a half fit Coutinho. He said we don't have the quality in the squad to cope with both players being unavailable and suggested in a couple of press interviews that he didn't get the quality he wanted in the transfer window.

"There were areas that needed improving," said Rodgers. "There is no doubt that we wanted to bring in other players who could have really helped us. But for whatever reason, they didn't come in.

"We all recognise we wanted to get in one or two more starters, which didn't materialise. A lot of work went into it. What is the case is we are not in a position to spend money for the sake of it. We are trying to build for the future with a sense of the present, to strengthen where we can. You can only do that if you can bring in players who will enhance the team, or you just stockpile players."

The manager has a point, we need quality to qualify for the Champions League, but we should have enough to beat newly promoted Hull. He really shouldn't be using any excuses for this defeat. It smacks of arse covering and diverting blame, although he did later give an interview where he said he is ultimately to blame being the manager.

Our form is worrying. After winning the first 3 games of the season we've since won 4 out of 10 games, and 2 out of the last 6. Most of our recent goals have been from set pieces. We are hanging in there in 4th place but the points per game ratio is dropping fast. A pattern is emerging, since we beat United in September we've only beaten teams in the bottom half of the table. Every top half side we've faced we've lost to or drawn against. Last season we had a poor record against other top half of the table sides as well. We are displaying characteristics of a soft side, flat track bullies against the shite, especially at Anfield but against quality or in an uncomfortable situation we fold. This reminds me of the mid 90s era under Roy Evans where we would play some lovely football and tear teams apart at times. The following results in 1995-96 come to mind; 3-0 vs Villa, 6-0 vs City and 5-0 vs Leeds. We got 71 points that season and finished 3rd. We won 14 home games but only 6 away games. I remember the 3-0 against Villa well. Fowler scored a great goal. After this match all reds were excited that we were mounting a title challenge but then the remaining 5 away games were LLDDD and then we lost the FA Cup final to United. Remember the cream suits?

In 95-96 we were considered a soft touch away from home, when the tough got going we rolled over. Put Barnes and Redknapp under pressure in midfield and they couldn't handle it. Sound familiar? Both couldn't tackle and were not the most mobile around the pitch. Back then we thought we needed more steel in midfield and so we signed Paul Ince. It didn't really work out. Maybe the idea was right but we signed the wrong player, after all Ince was 30 when we signed him. It just goes to show that if you keep making bad moves in the transfer market as a club you'll never progress, unless of course there is a bottomless pot of money.

A bottomless pot of money is not something we have unfortunately. So we really need to stop wasting money on players who have no impact on the side. We have a £17m centre back on the bench with the manager suggesting he doesn't have a clue who his best central defensive partnership is or should be. Allen (£15m) and Borini (£11m) look like flops right now and the likes of Alberto (£7m) and Aspas (£7m) haven't impressed. I don't know why we signed Ilori for £7m, he's not had a sniff.

Once again we're looking forward to another transfer window hoping this one will be the one where we bridge the gap. It would be great if we could get a Mascherano rather than a Paul Ince, but I won't be holding my breath. I think Brendan should concentrate on getting the best out of his current group of players and if we happen to sign quality in January treat it as a bonus. He talks about the need to be aggressive, but I've never seen us play aggressively under his management. We don't press and do not handle it well when we are pressed. It's like a return to the spice boy days. 95/96: Redknapp, McAteer, Babb, Mcmanaman, James, Collymore… 13/14: Allen, Henderson, Gerrard, Johnson, Coutinho, Lucas?

HULL, ENGLAND - Saturday, April 25, 2009: Hull City's goalkeeper Boaz Myhill is beaten by Liverpool's Xabi Alonso for the opening goal during the Premiership match at the KC Stadium. (Photo by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

The Norwich and West Ham games are crucial. Nothing less than 6 points will do. Norwich conceded 3 against Chelsea, 4 against United, 4 against Arsenal and 7 against City. They have the worse away record in the league. A win should take us clear of Everton as they have United at Old Trafford. Brendan needs to decide who the best centre back pairing is and stick to it. I'd go with:

Mig
Johnson, Toure, Sakho, Flanagan
Lucas
Henderson, Gerrard, Coutinho, Moses
Suarez

I predict a 2-0 win for the reds.

Mignolet The Magnificent

Posted: 30 Nov 2013 10:56 AM PST

This season there has been a lot of talk about our SAS (Sturridge and Suarez) and rightly so. Both have been superb. Suarez has 26 goals in his last 29 games for Liverpool while Sturridge has a mere 22 goals in 30 appearances for the club. Going beyond the numbers, both players pass the eyeball test as well. They really do tear teams apart both individually and as a partnership and it's great to see.

Having said that though, neither would be my LFC player of the season so far. It's our new goalie Simon Mignolet who would get my vote. He has been quite magnificent, hence the slightly cheesy title of this blog.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, September 21, 2013: Liverpool's goalkeeper Simon Mignolet in action against Southampton during the Premiership match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

There was a lot of apprehension amongst the fan base when it became obvious the club was looking for a new goal keeper. The incumbent, Pepe Reina was a very popular figure and the feeling was that although he had lost a bit of form in terms of shot stopping and maybe coming for crosses, he was slowly getting back to his old self. His distribution remained at a high level and he was a big character in the dressing room so most fans wanted to keep him.

We paid £9m for Mignolet so it was clear at least to me that he was going to be our number one goalie. However Brendan Rodgers said he and Pepe would provide competition for each other and distanced himself from speculation linking Pepe with Napoli or Barcelona.

It had been rumoured for months that Barca would be looking for a new keeper this season as their keeper, Victor Valdes had told them he would not be signing a new contract (he had one year left on his current deal). Pepe Reina was the keeper Barca wanted as Valdes' replacement and rumour was that Pepe would have jumped at the chance to go to them. It later became apparent that Liverpool were aware of the situation and so made sure they found a replacement for Pepe before he left. As it turned out Victor Valdes stayed at Barca for the final year of his contract and there was no need for them to sign a replacement in the summer, leaving Pepe Reina rather high and dry.

Although publicly Brendan was saying Mignolet and Pepe would fight for the position it became clear that Liverpool were looking to offload the Spaniard. Rafa at Napoli eventually took him on loan. It worked out quite well for Pepe as both his old manager and his favourite goal keeping coach Xavi Valero were at the club. Napoli are a top side in Italy and are in this year's Champions League. However he had this to say after leaving:

"If I have one regret, it is the way that I am leaving. It is only natural that I would be disappointed that the Liverpool management agreed to loan me to Napoli without telling me first. I thought that I deserved better than that even though I understand that difficult decisions have to be taken in football. A lot has been made about me informing the club that if an offer came in from Barcelona that I would have liked them to consider it. But I had also spoken to the club about the possibility of extending my contract if the offer was not made. I told the manager that I wanted to play for Liverpool and that Barcelona would only become an option for me if the opportunity arrived, like the rumours said it would, as it would give me a chance to go back home. When it didn't come I was happy to fight for my place, so I was surprised that Liverpool decided it was in the club's interests to send me to Napoli instead."

This is like a guy saying to his girlfriend “Babe listen, a couple of the guys at work have told me that Kim from accounts really fancies me. She’s really beautiful and her family is rich so I want to see if she’d like to be my girlfriend. If she’s not interested then I’d like us to get engaged. What do you think?”

I don’t know about any of you but that wouldn’t have gone down well with any of the girlfriends I’ve ever had.

The club took the opportunity to find a better, younger alternative, available for half the wages Pepe was earning and once they signed Mignolet its clear they wanted rid of Pepe. I don’t blame them, in fact I think it was clever. Given the fact the club is trying to get its finances in order. £80K-£90K for a number 2 keeper? That would be madness.

Some of the fan base, people more suspicious of FSG saw it as asset stripping. Cutting as much cost as possible so they could sell the club. Well, nobody seems to be moaning about selling Pepe now.

I know its early days and I’m aware things can change but purely going by his form so far Mignolet is the best Liverpool goalkeeper I’ve seen. He has made important world class saves in every game this season. Ray Clemence was before my time and I only remember the back end of Grobbelar’s career where he pulled off great saves but committed many howlers. David James was known as calamity James. Sander Westerveld was pretty good to begin with but turned into a nightmare. Jerzy Dudek was also very good in his first season but got progressively worse every year after. He did help win us the Champions League however.

Pepe Reina was excellent in his first 4 seasons, with his distribution superb but his form deteriorated. Check out his save percentage stats below

20131130-184439.jpg

Last season Pepe saved just 55% of shots on target in the penalty box. So basically when an opposing player took a shot in the box, almost half the time the ball would end up in our net. Whereas Mignolet saved 68% of shots on target in the box last season.

Also telling, is that last season Pepe saved just 28% of clear cut chances faced. Mignolet saved 43%.

The figures below show that Pepe is well ahead in the distribution stats. We probably knew that already.

20131130-184121.jpg<

I couldn't find any stats for this season but it wouldn't surprise me if Mignolet's save percentage is even better this season (in the 90s maybe?). He has won us a lot of points this season, I'd go as far to say that if we had an average keeper we'd be in mid table. When a keeper is that good at keeping the ball out of the net his distribution is a bonus. Please keep it up Mignolet.

Everton 3-3 Liverpool. What a game eh? A classic people are calling it and I agree. In the previous blog I said my head says 2-2 but my heart says 3-2 to us. I wasn't that far off but really, taking clear cut chances into account, it should have been 7-5 to Everton. The defending from both teams was quite dreadful. The first 2 goals, our goal and theirs... They would give defensive coaches nightmares.

You want to know what gives me nightmares? Our midfield. Or to be more accurate our lack of midfield. I have never in my life seen any opposition team have as many clear one on one situations with our goal keeper and the amount of times they had 4 against 3 or 3 against 2 situations against our defence was frightening. On those occasions when we managed to scramble the ball clear, the ball would still fall to an Everton player in the midfield area. It looked as if Everton had 15 players on the field. "Where the fuck is the midfield!?" Was my favourite rhetorical question during the 2nd half. All of them performed disappearing acts during the game.

Steven Gerrard aka Harry Houdini put in the worse performance of his career. He was shocking. Not by his standards either, but by anyone's standards. Had he been playing for Tranmere Rovers like that against Stanley, their manager Ronnie Moore would be thinking "fucking hell, think I might need to give Stevie the hook here". Stevie had 3 moments of quality. 2 set pieces that led to goals and a beautiful cross that Suarez should have buried. None of our other midfielders can create chances like that so Gerrard simply has to play in my opinion.

Lucas Leiva aka David Copperfield was doing my head in giving away foul after foul outside our penalty area as if there would be no consequences. Maybe he's unaware that Baines is deadly from free kicks, Lukaku is deadly in the air and our defending from set pieces is deadly. At times Everton ran rings around Lucas. He made some important blocked challenges and interceptions but is so slow on the turn these days. An attacker with skill and pace tend to go past him with ease. The way Ross Barkley was taking liberties in the first half, he made our midfielders look like cones on the training ground.

Joe Allen aka David Blaine was alright in possession in that he was one of the few able to pass to a team mate when we were under pressure. But when Everton had it he was too easily bypassed and you can't really rely on him to win a 50-50 challenge can you? The less said about his miss the better. 'Shocking' is an overused word in football but I was genuinely shocked to see the ball slotted wide. It wasn't even close to the goal. Fucking hell.

Jordan Henderson aka Dynamo was so anonymous I can't begin to describe his performance. He ran around a lot with intent but the only thing of note I remember from him was when he attempted a volley in midfield with nobody behind him, sliced the ball horribly and 2 seconds later Mignolet was pulling off another great save.

Philippe Coutinho aka Paul Daniels scored a neat opener but then went missing for very long spells as he tends to do against the better sides. He struggles to impose himself on the game against good sides. You feel this will come on during the next stage of his development.

Our midfield is good enough against the lesser sides and does well against teams that allow us space. Give Gerrard or Coutinho time and space and they'll kill you. Lucas will control a game if given time. But when up against quality, or pressing teams, especially away from home, the midfield consistently does the disappearing act, we struggle to pass the ball, we struggle to win the ball back due to our own lack of press and we drop points.
I think this will cost us in the long run so would like to see at least one quality midfield player with pace and power signed in January. M'Villa? Yes please.

The derby was a great game though, even if I did spend most of it with my head in my hands. I loved it when Sturridge equalised and ran to the Everton fans that were giving him abuse to do his dance. Brilliant.

The league table still looks pretty, we're second after 12 games. Still in a position we'd have taken if offered before the start of the season. So while there may be things that concern us we can still enjoy the season so far.

Hull City up next and I'm expecting 3 points but these sort of away games are always a potential banana skin. The players, with a full week with no games should be focused for this one. Surely we will have too much quality for them. Their 3 wins at home have been 1-0 wins against Sunderland, West Ham and Norwich. They lost last week to Crystal Palace.

Hull actually try to pass the ball under Steve Bruce but will probably see set pieces as their main weapon against us. I'd be tempted to go with Toure and Sakho from the start because I think Agger and Skrtle are too easily bullied. Although Johnson was as useless in the derby as a pair of binoculars are to Stevie Wonder he has to start at right back and after a very impressive display, young Flanagan should get the nod at left back. He was very good indeed in the derby, outperformed everyone except for Suarez and Mignolet in my opinion. I don't really rate the lad, but I've got to give credit where it's due. He did great and should be rewarded with another start. The position should be his to lose now until Enrique is fit.

I'd drop Allen and start with Sturridge in his place. Here is my side:

Mig the magnificent
Johnson, Toure, Sakho, Flanno
Lucas
Henderson, Gerrard, Coutinho
Suarez, Sturridge

Our league record against Steve Bruce sides isn't great but I think that will be put right on Sunday. We are the biggest club to go to Hull since they were promoted so their fans will be right up for it and the players will probably fly into us early on. That's when we need to control the game and give them no encouragement. I think we will have some scares during the game but eventually win it 3-1.

Cheers.

The Real Deal? Or Yet Another False Dawn?

Posted: 19 Nov 2013 08:13 AM PST

Due to popular demand (3 of you asking for it) I decided to give this blog writing a go. Recently in the comments section I wrote "Kopblog is dead. RIP." In no way was this in disrespect to Gerry, or Aitch but for whatever reason we hadn't had a new blog since August and that's far too long. Back in the day, we used to get a new blog every week and in 2008 we were treated to interviews with Tony Barrett and Tony Evans. (Not exactly A list celebrities but amongst the leading journalists who covered the club). Now, if we get one blog a month we are lucky. It would be great if out of a few of us, one could contribute a blog every week. Return Kopblog as being the Blog's Dollocks.

The international break gives us a good chance to take stock and evaluate how well Liverpool are doing. 11 games gone and we're 2nd in the league. 2 points behind the leaders. We are the 3rd highest scorers and only 2 clubs have conceded fewer goals than we have. If any of us would have been offered this before the start of the season we'd have took it and ran away before anyone changed their mind. In terms of results it really couldn't have gone any better than we'd hoped.
So why then are a large part of the fan base (myself included) unconvinced? Maybe it's because we have been in a similar position before and got all excited only to be let down for whatever reason. Like Digger has said in the comments a number of time "I've seen this movie before".

groudnhog

In 1996-97 after 12 games we were 2nd, just 2 points behind the leaders with a game in hand. After 31 games we were just 3 points behind the leaders, but picked up 8 points in the last 7 games. We finished 4th. (Only the top 2 qualified for the CL back then).

In 2001-02 after 11 games we were top of the league with the same record we have this season. By Christmas we were 5th however we did rally to finish 2nd with 80 points.

In 2002-03 after 12 games we were top of the league with 30 points. 4 points clear. We took 4 points from the next 12 games and were 6th in January. We finished 5th.

Those are examples of when we've started great and fell away. There are many other times as well when we've thought the team has come of age or turned a corner, and then we'd lose at home to a lesser side.

It's not these past failures that have me unconvinced though. Past failures don't have anything to do with the current side. We have different players, different manager, and different owners. What has me unconvinced is the way we have performed in most of our games.

When BR got the job he gave a lot of interviews where he talked about the way he likes to play. He spoke about the four Ps being the cornerstone of his philosophy.

NEWCASTLE-UPON-TYNE, ENGLAND - Saturday, October 19, 2013: Liverpool's manager Brendan Rodgers before the Premiership match against Newcastle United at St. James' Park. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

Possession

"I like to control games. I like to be responsible for our own destiny. If you are better than your opponent with the ball you have a 79 per cent chance of winning the game…for me it is quite logical. It doesn't matter how big or small you are, if you don't have the ball you can't score." – Brendan Rodgers

"If it is not going well we have a default mechanism which makes us hard to beat and we can pass our way into the game again. Rest with the ball. Then we'll build again." – Brendan Rodgers

Penetration.
Pressing.
Patience.

Then I read a number of fan forums where people have studied the way Swansea played under BR and studied the way Barca play. Then I read various comments Brendan made and it seemed to back it up. It all got me rather excited about what might be in store for Liverpool.

The tiki taka way

The tiki taka is based mostly on a 4-3-3 although there can be 3-4-3 or 4-2-3-1 or 4-1-2-3 variants.

The Formation

The 2 centre halves split very wide and the full backs push high up the pitch. The defensive midfield player acts as a pivot with 2 midfield in front to his left and right (you can also have the 2-1 midfield, the double pivot and the 'number 10' in front). Ahead of that is the 3 up top. Central striker and 2 wide forwards. The triangles represent the passing angles and the pressing zones when the team doesn't have the ball.

Pressing

Winning the ball back quickly is the most important part. The idea is to win the ball back within 5 or 6 seconds after losing it. Look at the triangles in the image, these are zones. Lose the ball in those zones and the 3 players that make up the triangle are meant to hunt for the ball. So for example say the central striker here is Sturridge the midfield player on the right is Henderson and the right wide forward is Suarez. Should Suarez lose the ball while trying to dribble to his left, Sturridge, Henderson and Suarez himself need to hunt the ball. The rest of the team move up as a cohesive unit to condense the space. If Sturridge, Henderson and Suarez fail to win it back in 5 or 6 seconds they along with the rest of the team retreats into a deeper reactive defensive position and wait for certain triggers to attempt to get the ball back again.

Triggers

There are certain triggers that the team waits for in order to press in packs of 3. The few that I know of are when a player has to look at the ball to control it, or a player miss-controls, or receives it facing his own goal.

"You cannot go (press) on your own…You work on zonal pressure, so that when it is in your zone, you have the capacity to press. That ability to press immediately, within five or six seconds to get the ball, is important. But you also have to understand when you can't and what the triggers are then to go for it again because you can't run about like a madman."Brendan Rodgers

I remember watching Barca play against Arsenal at the Emirates in the Champions League and the first 20 minutes was the best football I have ever seen in my life. They would lose the ball and win it back in 2 or 3 seconds. Arsenal who are a very good passing side just could not cope and really should have been slaughtered 5 or 6-0 by half time. Their 5-0 and 6-2 wins over Real Madrid are also good examples. Obviously Barca have world class players all over the pitch so I wasn't expecting Liverpool to be playing like this. But I thought if Swansea can dominate the ball against the likes of Arsenal and United under Brendan's management then with better players and better resources at Anfield he should be able to make a big impact.

We signed Joe Allen for £15m and went to 4-3-3. Results were not good but you could see the way we were trying to play. We had lots of possession but no pressing and not a lot of penetration. Early days though – I thought the other elements would develop over a few months or maybe when we strengthened further in January.

The reality though is our game didn’t seem to develop from August to December and it looked like we had the same problems every week. Struggle to break teams down, get caught out in transition, concede daft goals.

In January we signed Sturridge and Coutinho and the philosophy seemed to change. We were more direct, and reactive. Catching teams on the counter attack. We scored more goals and won more games. I've not heard Brendan mention the 4ps since. In fact in an interview he did where some of the lads at the anfield wrap and other blogs were asking him questions – someone brought up the 4ps, wanting the manager to go into more detail on it but Brendan dismissed it as the media making a big deal of it. That set my bullshitometer off and I've been a bit wary ever since.

Brendan Rodgers deserves credit for being pragmatic and changing up the tactics in order to get better results. However going into this season, with an entire off season to identify transfer targets, plan how the team will play and coach the players accordingly I would have thought the performances would begin to reflect the manager’s philosophy. The reality is that it hasn’t. The first 3 games we went 1-0 up early and hung on for our lives in the 2nd half. We gave up possession in those games and didn’t press at all. Carragher, working as a pundit for Sky couldn’t understand why we were deploying those tactics and bear in mind, Carra was training under BR just a few months ago, and he’s baffled. This got me thinking that our results weren’t coming by tactical design but more down to the fact we had a striker in hot form and a goalie making unbelievable saves.

Then came the 4 centre halves against Southampton, a team that presses. Then 3 at the back and now 4 at the back again. At times Gerrard is deeper than Lucas, other times he’s been higher up the field in attacking areas. Moses started left wing, then in the ‘number 10′ position and then the bench. Skrtle was on the verge of being bombed out, next he’s first choice. Agger was first choice, made vice captain, then he’s out until our most recent game. Pragmatism from our manager? Or is he winging it?

Does it even matter it matter though? If the season started on new year's day we'd be 4th in the league. See table below.

tables

Looking at these 2 tables the evidence suggests we are the real deal with Brendan doing a fine job. The 2013 table is 29 games and the last 38 game table is of course taking into account results over our last 38 games. This suggests that over a long period of time we have shown consistency. Champions league qualification form if you will.

But hold on. There is a caveat. Neither of these tables include our first 11 games last season where we played West Brom away, City home, Arsenal home, United home, Everton away, Chelsea away. I think if I'm to be convinced about our credentials we must include a tough run of fixtures to give an accurate idea on how well we've done over a period of time. That's why the most important period is August – May. After all, you play everyone home and away and there is inevitably that part of the season where you have the tough run of fixtures.

On December 30th we'd have played all teams in the league and will have faced the tough matches away from home. If we are still top 4 or close to top 4 in the above tables and of course the real table then I will be a believer.

Nonetheless Brendan deserves great credit for our improvement. Look at the goal scored and goal difference in the tables above. We are putting sides to the sword especially at home. Since January we’ve been very good against the bottom half teams at Anfield. For years we have struggled to beat lesser teams at home. Now when the shite teams come to Anfield they get their asses whooped.

A question I’ve asked myself a few times is can Brendan get us to punch above our weight. Can we finish above teams who on paper should be finishing above us. Are we the real deal or is this another false dawn? We will start getting some answers to these questions over the next 6 weeks or so. Starting with the Derby.

For the first time in a while I’m a little worried going into this fixture. Usually going up against Everton I’m confident we’ll win. They tended to choke under Moyes when up against us. Almost as if they made the game bigger than it was. Got too fired up and played poorly. Under Martinez though they pass it better and they have proved difficult to beat. They have already played Chelsea and Spurs at Goodison. Beating Chelsea 1-0 and drawing 0-0 with Spurs. Their only defeat was away to City. This is going to be a tough game.

No doubt the Everton crowd will be up for it early on, booing Suarez and Gerrard any time they get near the ball. Screaming at the ref any time one of our players make a tackle. Our players will need to show some minerals. We need to pass the ball well, quiet the crowd. Get them frustrated. Our midfield cannot crumble when pressed, they need to step up and control the game. No silly fouls near our area or giving away stupid corners. The lads need to be composed. I’d be tempted to leave out Coutinho and play Allen, to try to get control of the midfield. Allowing Gerrard to push further forward.

I’d pick the following team:

Mignolet, Johnson, Toure, Agger, Enrique, Lucas, Allen, Henderson, Gerrard, Suarez, Sturridge.

Hendo to play inside right with Johnson overlapping him. These 2 combine well on the right and can catch Everton out when Baines is high up the pitch. I’d have Suarez penetrating from the left. Not playing as a winger but taking up positions towards the left. He is one of the few who is on Enrique’s wavelength.

Gerrard in an advanced midfield role is key for creativity centrally. He’s torn Everton apart from this position many times and could do so again.

If things aren't going well we can always bring Coutinho and Moses off the bench to make an impact.

Prediction: My head says 2-2 but the heart says we’ll win 3-2.

Hope you enjoyed the blog. Now lets have some debate. Cheers.

A Big Week For Rodgers Reds

Posted: 30 Aug 2013 07:54 PM PDT

Well we are halfway through what will ultimately prove to be a defining week for The Reds. Two games and two wins behind us with a big game and the end of the transfer window ahead of us. To be honest I'm still have some doubts about our owners, our manager and this team at the moment but I expect, one way or another, we'll get some answers in the coming days.

Last weekend we continued our great start to the season with a very useful 1-0 win at Villa Park which was especially sweet considering we only played for 30 minutes. Some people say it's a good sign when you can win while playing badly but it's an even better sign when you win without playing at all! Strange the way football works sometimes. At the start of last season we played very well but the results didn't come, this season we've got the results but haven't really got going yet in terms of performance. Last weekend only Mignolet, Toure, Gerrard and Sturridge emerged from that game with any credit in my opinion, the rest of the team was in the OK to Poor range, and yes I'm talking to you Dagger and Lucas!

I actually enjoyed our performance for the first 30 minutes. While it lasted It was an excellent away display as we took control, played some really good football and capped it all off with a brilliant finish by Sturridge, who is slicker than dog shit on linoleum at the moment. Unfortunately things started to go downhill from there and we gradually got worse and worse as the game went on but thankfully we hung on and took the points.

Not to worry though because afterwards Rodgers said it was all part of his tactical plan. Apparently playing shite and constantly giving the ball back to the opposition for an hour was in fact a tactical move according to our Brendan, so it's all good. In my opinion, we over compensated defensively once we got our noses in front and handed the initiative back to the opposition, but hey what would I know. Anyway, we've got our 6 points on the board and that's better than a kick in the nuts with a frozen cowboy boot.

Then we moved on to our Capitol One Cup game at home to Notts County on Tuesday that saw us almost top Miley Cyrus for the most embarrassing performance of the week! Rodgers put out a strong side which I believe was the correct decision, firstly because without European football this season we might as well have a good go at the cup competitions and secondly because I think you've got to play the younger players alongside the experienced ones to really see how they fit in.

In fairness the team played well for most of the game, scored two goals, wasted a whole host of other chances and hit the bar more often than Paul Gascoigne! But in football you can never give a sucker an even break and to their credit Notts County hung in there and somehow managed to pull two goals back and push the game to extra time, when we finally managed to kill them off with goals from Dan the Man and Hendo.

It turned out to be an expensive victory for us though as Cissokho, Allen and the very impressive Toure all picked up injuries. Their injuries will perhaps keep them side-lined for the coming weeks, and our already thin squad is now looking practically anorexic!

Our Cup struggles against Notts County yielded us an unkind draw away to the Mancs in the next round but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it, for now we've got to focus on them coming to Anfield on Sunday. I will be at the game and I'm going with neither confidence nor dread because the truth is I just don't know how it will go. We could win 3-0 or lose 4-0, I just haven't seen enough of either side to form an opinion.

But this is definitely a big game for Rodgers. Our games against the top six sides last season yielded just one victory against Spurs and that's just not good enough regardless of the circumstances. A victory on Sunday and we'll be flying but a defeat will totally change the mood and see us go into the international break on a real downer. Questions and doubts will be raised about the manager even at this early stage in the season, I'm not suggesting that is fair but it is the reality. Rodgers needs to get this particular monkey off his back as soon as possible. He needs to mastermind some victories against the top sides this season, particularly at Anfield and Sunday's game would be an excellent place to start.

It definitely will not be easy though partially as we may be without Kolo at the centre of our defence. I said in the last blog that I thought Skrtel had been harshly frozen out by the manager and it seems that particularly chicken may come home to roost. Now Rodgers might need him and Skrtel will have to go in to the game cold and knowing the manager does not have confidence in him. This can go one of two ways, either Skrtel's head will be down or he'll go into the game feeling he has a point to prove, let us hope it is the latter!

The mancs will know all about cutting off the supply line to Coutinho and Sturridge, keeping our full backs pressed back etc, but sometimes in these games it's the lesser hyped players that can travel under the radar, get a little extra space and make a name for themselves. So someone like Aspas or maybe even Hendo could emerge as the hero for us in this game.

As for the Mancs, we know they have a lot of attacking threat and the team will just have to remain focused and cope with it. A key man for us will be Lucas but since returning from his injury you just never know which Lucas will turn up. Sometimes he looks back to his old self but other times he looks about as much use as a soap salesman in Newcastle! We will badly need the good version of Lucas on Sunday to help snuff out the manc threat. If we get the bad version, the version that gets booked after 5 minutes, gives away lots of needless free-kicks in dangerous areas, gets caught in possession while dwelling too long on the ball, we could be in big trouble.

Anyway, as I mentioned earlier I just don't know how this one will go. I desperately hope we can win it but with both managers under pressure not to lose, it could turn out to be a draw. So I'll put my money on a 1-1 draw but I'll be keeping fingers, legs, toes and just about everything else crossed that we can nick a win and go into the international break with the massive boost of having 9 points and a 100% record.

But perhaps even more important than the game on Sunday is the transfer window closing on Monday. We simply must get more bodies in before that window slams shut. The transfer business we do, assuming we do any, will ultimately determine our possibilities and the ambition of the club for this season. For me it's a simple one to one proposition, no business – no chance, a little business – a little chance, big business – big chance, you get the gist.

I can understand the owners want to be careful with the purse strings given the money that has been wasted on transfers in the past and I agree that it is wise to be prudent, but they've also got to be careful they don't overdo it. There is no doubt they were badly advised in paying way over the odds for the mediocre players recruited when Dalglish was in charge, but they hired those advisors and must accept at least partial responsibility for that debacle.

It certainly wasn't the fault of Brendan Rodgers or his team and they shouldn't have to suffer because of other peoples past mistakes. At the end of the day Rodgers is their appointment and I think he could be a good one but they've got to give the guy a chance by backing him as much as possible in the transfer market.

I said at the beginning that I still had some doubts about the manager but that comes from the fact that I don't think he has had the opportunity to fully implement his plans yet. In his short time at the club he has had to oversee the offloading of a lot of over-priced/over paid players that didn't fit the profile and make space for the recruitment of players that do in the transfer windows that have followed.

So there has been a lot of necessary squad transition going on and he has managed that quite well. Almost all of the deadwood has now been moved on but our squad is now a little too light and a few more bodies are required before this transfer window closes. I like Rodgers and think he could be the right manager for us but we can't really make a fair judgement on him until he has been given the right tools to do the job.

I believe we need to bring in another three or four decent quality players in the remainder of this transfer window to give him the squad he needs to fully implement his ideas and it is only then that we will truly know if he is the man that can lead us to the Promised Land. Thankfully recent reports suggest this is happening with Sakho and Illori reportedly on their way to us. I'd be well pleased with those two quality signings added to our defence.

There is also talk of a loan signing of Moses for our left wing and as we've already had God, Jesus and a Saint, he should fit right in at our place! I'd also like to see another good quality central midfielder recruited but we'll see what happens.

So I've got my fingers crossed and may even sacrifice a chicken or two in the hope that we can get a good result on Sunday and an even better result on Monday to successfully complete what could prove to be a season defining week for the club.

Liverpool Must Multiply To Go Fourth!

Posted: 22 Aug 2013 05:10 AM PDT

Sorry I'm a bit late with this blog, but I'm as busy as an Egyptian road sweeper at the moment. Anyway I don't know anybody else but I'm as happy as a dog with three testicles. I don't remember the last time we got a win on the opening day of the season but it's brilliant to get off to a winning start and particularly sweet after the Suarez media sideshow we've had to endure in recent weeks. A good performance, three points and a clean sheet, life is good!

It was a good performance overall but as ever with Liverpool they just don't do things the easy way and almost managed to snatch a draw from the jaws of victory. We played some really good football at times, had enough shots to start a war but only managed to score one goal and had to endure a nervy end to game that really should have been put to bed long before the final whistle.

Strange the way football works sometimes. Simon Mignolet spend most of the game flapping about like an epileptic pigeon but his brilliant double save from Stokes last minute penalty secured us the points and now he is a hero. Let's hope it is the shot in the arm his confidence needed for him to kick on from here because there is no doubt in my mind that he is an excellent keeper, he just needs to settle down and do his stuff.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND - Saturday, August 17, 2013: Liverpool's Daniel Sturridge celebrates with team-mates after scoring the first goal against Stoke City during the Premiership match at Anfield. (Pic by David Rawcliffe/Propaganda)

I was also impressed with the other new boys Toure and Aspas. Both did very well, Toure looks very solid at the back and he is not afraid to come forward when the opportunity presents itself, which is good to see, and he was so unlucky not to score when his header came back off the crossbar. I'm really impressed by Aspas so far. He really covers the grass and was maybe a little unlucky himself not to score but I'm pretty confident the goals will come for this guy. He is almost Kuyt-like in terms of work rate but I fancy he will get more goals, double figures this season for sure, trust me!

Sturridge was also particularly impressive considering he is not yet 100% fit. You always feel this guy has a goal in him but the key is going to be him avoiding injury. If he can stay injury free this campaign he will be at or near the top of the goal-scoring charts at the end of the season for sure. The rest of the team also did well with no obvious deadwood on show, we just let ourselves down a little with our finishing and almost paid the price for that but in a strange way a hard fought 1-0 win might prove more beneficial to the team right now than an easy 3 or 4 nil stroll. Not what I would regard as a great performance overall, as I thought we were quite sloppy at times particularly in the latter stages when nerves started to show, but good enough to merit the points and plenty to build on in the games ahead.

Now for the negative stuff and my big concern at the moment is the depth of the squad. While I accept that not being involved in Europe this season means we can get by with a smaller squad, I still think we are short on numbers. Look at this team: Goalkeeper – Reina, Defence – Carra, possibly one or both of Skrtel and Coates, Robinson, Midfield – Downing, Shelvey, Spearing, Suso and an attack of Carroll and Pacheco. If you add in a right back to that lot you would have a pretty decent lower to mid table Premiership team but that is depth we have lost from our squad through sales, loans and retirements over the summer.

I don't really have a problem with these players moving on, in fact in most cases I welcome it, but it bothers me that not enough replacements have come in so far. I was happy with our four early signings but nothing followed until today's news of the welcome addition of Ally Cissokho as extra cover at left back. I was also really very disappointed to hear today that we seem to have missed out on yet another of our top targets with Willian seemingly on his way to Spurs despite the fact that Liverpool seemed to have this signing within their grasp over the weekend.

So yet another marquee signing gets away from us. The first guy, Micky Tarhead or whatever the bloody hell his name was, the club lamented the fact that they never even had a chance to talk to him, then came Diego Costa who elected to sign a new contract at Atletico Madrid. However, there was no such difficulties with Willian who was available and seemed quite keen to come to Anfield but as our guys were pissing about on terms, Spurs have apparently come straight in and taken him away from us, as they've done before. I don't think Spurs even have a scouting team, they just seem to follow ours around and pinch the players we are looking at!

We need to bring in another 2 or 3 players who are ready now to play in the first team but according to the latest reports I've been reading we are being linked with a 20yr old, an 18yr old and a bloody 16yr old FFS! They just keep getting younger, I swear one day we are going to hear the club has put a £1 million bid in for a sperm! It's getting ridiculous, we have champagne ambitions but a lemonade transfer budget!

I say transfer budget but of course the club hasn't actually spent any money yet given that the money brought in from transfer has exceeded the little that was spent, not to mention the reduction in the clubs wage bill. In fairness I think the money is there but it needs to be used on players who are ready now for the first team not more bloody kids, Jaysus it's as well we're not in the Champions League as we'd only have half a bleedin team, the other half wouldn't be allowed to stay up past 8 o'clock!

More new faces are not a luxury for us they are an absolute necessity. Consider our midfield three from Saturday's team, Gerrard, Lucas and Henderson, and the cover on the bench was Joe Allen. They are the four main men we have to cover perhaps the most important area of the team, just four men to cover three positions. Three of those four have just recently returned from long term injuries and if one or two of them get side-lined again we will be down to the bare bones. Young Luis Alberto was brought in during the summer and he looks a very promising lad but he's not ready yet and he didn't get too many minutes in our pre-season games which would seem to indicate that Rodgers doesn't think he's ready for the first team yet either. Beyond him the cupboard looks pretty bare in terms of central midfield.

I'd also like to see another wide midfielder and a striker. In my opinion, we have enough options in defence now that Cissokho has come in as another left back option. We've got plenty of options at right back and I also don't see another centre back as a priority. We've got Dagger and Toure in the team at the moment. Beyond them we've still got Skrtel who I think has been a bit harshly treated by the manager.

I know he had a dodgy spell last season but I still think it's wrong that he has been totally frozen out since then, I mean the season before he was our Player of the Season. He is still a very good player and I'd much rather go with him as cover then spend £10 million+ on an unknown quantity when that money can be used to better effect in other areas of the team. Beyond Skrtel we've got Coates who I believe has just been side-lined with a nasty knee injury while on international duty but he'll be back in a couple of months and we've also got Wisdom and Kelly who can play centre back. So I'd say fine if we can bring in another centre back without compromising the spending on other areas of the team but if not I'd say go with what we have for now.

My predictions for the season? Well last season we finished 7th in the Premier League but all things considered, new manager, difficult start, bad luck etc, I rated us as about the sixth best team in the league. Now after our pre-season and our transfer activity so far, I would still rate us as sixth and without further first team quality reinforcements I believe that is where we will finish the season.

Quite honestly I think anyone who believes we will finish above that with the current squad, is away with the fairies. The manc sides and the chavs are miles ahead of us at the moment. Gollum, the Special Needs One and Peter the Pelican have teams full of World Class players and even more World Class players sitting on the bench who they can call upon to change games in their favour when things are going against them, not to mention the fact that they have pots of cash to go and buy more. Spurs are also disappearing over the hill. They have shown ambition, invested a lot of cash in their squad and seem to have the ability to move quickly in the transfer market while our guys seem to take longer than a rich man's funeral! Arsenal are in a bit of a mess at the moment and might be catchable if that continues.

So I can't see us finishing higher than sixth at the moment but I dearly hope the team can prove me wrong and I will be delighted to eat a truck load of humble pie should that be the case. Sorry for being a miserable shit but on the plus side, when it comes to predictions I'm about as much use as a rubber crutch so don't let my opinions burst your bubble!

Anyway, we're away at Aston Villa at the weekend hoping to continue our good start to the season. It will be a tough but should be a good game. Villa are in good form at the moment after their great win at Arsenal and a narrow defeat early this evening at Chelsea so they will be well up for it in their first home game of the season.

They obviously play a more open game then we faced against Stoke which should suit us but we will need to work hard and certainly be more clinical in front of goal when the chances come our way. Our defence will definitely be tested and it will be interesting to see how Dagger and Toure cope with Benteke who is a real handful. Overall though I think we can nick the points and my money's on us coming away with a 2 – 1 win.

Steven Gerrard – The Last Legend

Posted: 02 Aug 2013 11:29 AM PDT

Sometimes it's tough being a blogger, even a brilliantly talented blogger such as myself who, let's be honest about it, would be just about perfect except for my modesty! Anyway I figure it's high time I posted a new blog, but then I've got to decide on a topic. Decisions, decisions it's all go here at Kopblog HQ.

So I think maybe I'll write about Pepe Reina who has gone on loan to Napoli and is definitely, probably, maybe, not really angry at the club about apparently not telling him about it. Jaysus, Pepe with such an indecisive mind I can see why you always had trouble with corner kicks! Besides, there are undiscovered tribes in the deepest, darkest parts of the Amazon who knew this move to Napoli was very much on the cards, so don't talk shite lad!

Then I thought maybe I'd write about Suarez and the fact that it's looking like he will definitely, probably, maybe, won't be leaving the club this summer. Who can say how this sorry episode will turn out? To me it's kind of like a tetanus injection, on the one hand you don't want it to happen but on the other you just want it over with as quickly as possible. But I'm a bit fed up reading about this topic as I'm sure everybody else is so let's park it until there is some fresh information.

I then decided I would write a blog full of fire and brimstone as I am so pissed off at the club's lack of activity in the transfer market. Particularly as we see Spurs bringing their transfer spending to £50 million with today's signing of Sodildo. Bloody Spurs! A team we are at the very least on a financial par with and a team we finished 11 points behind last season. Yet they are showing some ambition and investing in their side while our guys are pissing about looking to bring in mediocre players on loan deals.

Granted Spurs may well recover their investment with the possible sale of Bale but they have invested a lot of money in their squad in recent seasons and I suspect they would have spent this cash regardless of the Bale situation. So I was really pushed over the edge when I read Rodgers comments today stating that the cash is available but he may not spend it if he can't find the right quality in the market! What a lot of crap, it made me want to grab him by the throat and beat him like a red headed step child to knock some sense into him.

I know managers have to say this kind of stuff to avoid been held to ransom etc, but it does my head in because a lot of what he has been saying recently sounds a lot like the stuff he said during last summer's transfer window and we all know what a complete mess that turned out to be. But I calmed down a little when I heard the news earlier that the club have definitely, probably, maybe bid £22million for Diego Costa Fortune. So I've had to park that blog as well because if the Costa bid is real then many of my brilliantly thought out points would be about as useless as a nuns tits!

But then I was reminded that this weekend see's Liverpool playing Olympiacos in the Steven Gerrard Testimonial and this has totally mellowed me out so I figured I'd pay tribute to the Great Man. As I began to write the words seemed somehow familiar so I dug deep into the Kopblog HQ vaults and found the below piece that I wrote back in November 28th 2006 titled, Is Captain Gerrard a Superhero? I kinda like this old blog as this was written when Gerrard was in his prime and it gives a little flavor of what we were talking about back in the day.

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's Captain Gerrard coming to save the day. I sometimes wonder if it's time for StevieG to start wearing his underpants outside of his trousers. It's amazing how, when things seem at their most desperate, it's often Captain Gerrard who arrives to pull our asses out of the fire and I'm beginning to think of him as our very own Superhero!

Saturday was yet another example. Man City came to Anfield for a draw and they set themselves up both tactically and physically to achieve that result, and for a long time it looked as if they would be successful in that regard. Although we enjoyed the lion's share of possession, we seemed to lack the pace and width in our attack to break them down. However, once again Captain Stevie rescues the situation by rocketing in a goal from outside the box to give us a hugely important three points.

There have been many examples of Captain Gerrard's super powers over the years. In the closing months of Houllier's last season when we faced a huge uphill task to get into the last CL qualifying spot, it was Captain Gerrard who almost single-handedly drove us to victory in those final games and got us into fourth spot. The following season, saw us once again in a desperate situation, when with the clock ticking down at Anfield we needed to score one more goal against Olympiacos to see us through to the next stage of the CL, and once again it was Captain Gerrard who saved the situation with a wonderful long range strike.

Perhaps, Istanbul provided us with his finest moment. 3-0 down at half time against AC Milan in the CL final, our cause seemed hopeless and we desperately needed some inspiration from somewhere in the second half. Again it was Captain Stevie who came to the rescue by scoring our first goal and driving us forward to victory in the greatest comeback the game has ever seen.

Last season's FA Cup final with West Ham was more of the same. Gerrard had already scored one and put in a wonderful pass to Cisse for our second but we still found ourselves mere moments from defeat. However, Captain Gerrard wasn't finished yet and from absolutely nowhere he scored a brilliant 40 yard thunderbolt to put us back on level terms and we went on to lift the cup after a penalty shoot-out.

These are just several high profile examples of Captain Stevie's super-powers but there are literally dozens of others. However, throughout the World Cup for England and for the most part of this season he hasn't been at his best. A number of reasons have been put forward for this, but whatever the cause, he has often played as if someone must have slipped some kryptonite into his tea.

Thankfully, there have been some good signs recently that his super-powers may be returning. This is of course great news for Reds fans as he is such a vitally important player for us. When we find ourselves in deep shit and Captain Stevie rescues us with a long-range thunderbolt or a brilliant pass, we are all absolutely delighted. So delighted in fact, that we often forget to examine why we were in deep shit in the first place!

Despite the fact that Rafa has assembled a fairly strong squad of players, I still feel that with the exception of Gerrard, we are still a little lightweight when it comes to real quality. We have a mixture of some good and very good players, and some others with great potential. But in terms of true top class quality, then beyond Gerrard, the cupboard looks pretty bare.

I know some people may disagree with that, but I think sometimes as supporters we have a tendency to overvalue the ability of our players. We tend to base our judgement of them on what they occasionally show they are capable of doing, rather than what they actually do on a regular basis. I am certain there will be much better things to come from this squad of players when things click into place in the remainder of the season. But if we were to judge things based on what we've seen from them so far this season, then it makes for pretty poor reading.

Despite all the extra strength brought into the squad over the summer, in my view the only players who have shown any type of consistency in their performances in the season so far are Carra, Agger, Sissoko, Kuyt and Crouch. For a team that had hopes of mounting a title challenge, this really is a pitiful small number. Unfortunately, injury has robbed us of Momo but thankfully in recent games Gerrard, Reina and even Zenden have also started to kick in with some good performances.

However, as I mentioned in a previous blog my real worry is in the wide areas. For a team who often plays with two wingers, the quality of our crosses from wide positions has really been deplorable. It would be easy to hang this all on our wingers but I think we must also have a look at our full-backs. Just as wingers are expected to get back and support their full-backs, I think in the modern game it is equally important for the full-backs to get forward whenever possible to support the winger.

Riise and Finnan are two favourites of mine but I don't think they've been getting forward in support as much as they should. Recently we enjoyed an incredible 80% of the possession against Middlesboring and couldn't find a way to break them down. On Saturday, again we enjoyed the lion's share of possession but in the end we had to rely on a Captain Stevie thunderbolt to win us the points.

In our next three league games we face Pompey, Wigan and Fulham. Just like against City and Boro, these are three sides against whom we will have most certainly have a huge amount of possession. In such circumstances our full backs have got to contribute more to the attack. We really should be hitting these sides like a Red tide with wave after wave of attack. Three wins in these games are well within our capability and could see us back in the top four.

My point is, superhero or not, we can't keep relying on Captain Gerrard to come to the rescue and pull our asses out of the fire. It's high time for some of our other players to get out of their comfort zones and take some responsibility. With all the teams around us dropping points, a little winning run now, against very beatable opponents, and we could very well find ourselves in 3rd spot by Christmas. That would be an incredible turnaround after our poor start to the season and a great opportunity to rub our critic's noses in it. If some of our players are truly worthy of wearing a Liverpool shirt, surely this should be all the motivation they need.
That was a blog from 7 years ago and yet it's amazing how some of the points are still relevant today. I wrote another blog many years ago where I picked my all-time Liverpool Top 10 players and on that list I had Gerrard at number 3 behind Kenny and Barnes but I've revised my opinions over the years and if I had to write that same list again today, Gerrard would most definitely be my number 1 and the first name on the team sheet of my all-time 11.

The reason for this is that while I've seen many, many great players wearing the Red shirt in my 40+ years of support, most of the other greats were playing in sides where they were surrounded by other great players. Gerrard on the hand has spent most of his Liverpool career often surrounded by average players, journeymen and complete clowns, but despite this he has still managed to shine as a World Class player, and as I pointed out in that old blog there have been many occasions where he has carried the team on his back.

We've all been guilty at times of taken him for granted but the guy is a bloody hero and a total Legend. Unfortunately he could well prove to be our last legend. We have some talented young lads in the squad now who may go on to become World Class players in their own right but you can bet if they do they will be off quicker than a brides nightie and with the club's current transfer policy seeming to be somewhere between penny-pinching and child abduction, I don't see too many Legends emerging in our future.

So this weekend let's celebrate the one Legend we've got left and I hope him and his family have a fantastic day. I also hope/pray he can give us another few seasons because I shudder to think where we would be without him. So as I asked in the title of that old blog, Is Captain Gerrard a Superhero? Don't talk daft, of course he bloody well is!

On a final note, can I say that it is with much regret that I am currently speaking to my legal team about a possible legal action against the club. Earlier this week the club released a list of banned words and phrases to its staff. But I was shocked to see that this list which by now has appeared in most national newspapers reads remarkably similar to one of my typical blogs, it's bloody plagiarism I tell you! Cheeky Bastards, I'll see you in court Mr. Ayre.

Kindergarten Kop

Well doesn't time fly when you're having fun. After the joys of a summer filled with the Confetti Cup, the Welsh Lions tour of Australia, the annual Spot the Lesbian competition at Wimbledon and other such delights, our pre-season is well and truly underway ahead of the new season and I'm so excited I have to sit on my hands to keep from clapping!

The 4-0 win against Preston last weekend and our 2-0 win against whoever we were playing in Indonesia yesterday were decent run outs for the squad as they ease their way towards the levels required for the season ahead. It has also been good to get an early look at the new additions to the squad and all of them have looked pretty decent so far.

I like the look of Toure in the centre of defence. He's certainly a bigger lad than I remember and seems to have a real presence about him at the back, definitely a very good addition in my opinion. Mignolet hasn't had a lot to do in the games so far but what little he has had to do, he's done really well. He is also a talker/shouter and doesn't seem to be afraid to give the defenders in front of him a real earful which is great to see. I've just heard the news that it seems Pepe is off for a season long loan to Napoli and I'm sorry to see him go but I think we're in safe "hands" with Mignolet and he is another very good addition.

We can't be as sure about the other two new additions Aspas and Alberto at this stage. Both of them have looked really good so far but the quality of the opposition they've faced hasn't been great and I don't think we will be sure about either of them until the real stuff begins in August. They both look very promising though, Aspas is like a hyena on acid constantly on the move and always hungry for the ball and Alberto seems like a classy player with a good range of passes and a good football brain to go with them.

As for the players from last season, it has been the youngsters who have been the stand out performers so far. I really like the look of young Poison Ibe. He is still very young but looks very promising. It will be difficult, particularly without European football, but I hope he gets some more game time next season because potentially I think this kid could be a future star.

Also good to see Sterling return with a bit of fire in his stomach. While he does tend to get a touch of Alzheimer's when he's on the ball and forgets to pass, he is still an exciting talent and next season could be a big year for him if he continues to progress and avoids injury. But the big star for me so far has been Couthino.

I'm not sure if it's strictly legal for a man of my age to say such a thing, but I love this kid! Despite his tender years he is a wonderful footballer and a real joy to watch at times. To be honest, when we signed him back in January and I first got a look at him I thought he would be far too lightweight for the Premier League. I mean I've eaten burgers stacked taller than this lad and he looks like a stiff breeze would blow him over but looks have turned out to be very deceptive in this case.

The lad is a terrific player, he's got everything, touch, vision, close control etc. He made a big impact as soon as he was brought into the side but for me he really came into his own when he was moved into the central role off the striker. From there he was on the ball a lot more and able to exert a greater influence then he could in the wide role where he would drift in and out of the game which tends to be the standard return you get from wide men.

Of course Tino is still a very young lad and his form may dip here and there but for my money when you have player like him in your side you get the ball to them as often as possible and let them make things happen and this would be most effective if he is playing centrally. Unfortunately I've no doubt he will become a marked man among some of the Premier League knuckle draggers but if he can survive the upcoming season without suffering too many serious knocks, he will be a massive player for us and a key part of any relative success we achieve.

My biggest regret about the pre-season so far is that Sturridge is sitting at home nursing an ankle injury and hopefully reading the Bumper Book of Non Cringe-worthy Goal Celebrations. Sturridge is going to be a really important player for us in the campaign ahead, particularly as Suarez's future is at best uncertain, I see he has arrived in Australia (I thought we had stopped sending criminals there?). And there's also Aspas who is unproven and Borini who couldn't hit a blind donkey in the arse with a banjo!

Obviously we want to see goals coming from all areas of the team but if we are to make any progress on improving our league position we are going to need a 20+ league goals a season striker. Sturridge certainly fits the bill but it's worrying that he is missing out on pre-season and his legs seem to be made of glass! We definitely need to make a signing in this area.

Rodgers has said there will be more "exciting" signings before the end of the transfer window, but 48 hours before the close of last summer's transfer window Rodgers also stated that he was expecting us to sign another 2 or 3 players and we all know what happened then. Rodgers also recently said that Mignolet was brought in to compete with Reina, and of course Pepe is now on his way to Napoli. So you'll forgive me if I don't arrange any street parties on the basis of what Rodgers says.

Apologies if the rest of this blog appears to be a little negative but I lost my rose-tinted spectacles a long time ago and I've never been a big smoke and mirrors fan. What am I on about? Well to be honest I'm not sure but my spider senses are tingling and maybe I overdid it on the curry last night, but something doesn't smell right. Over the years this is normally the time when I start really looking forward to the season ahead but right now I'm feeling as confused as a hungry baby in a topless bar!

Despite the fact that we finished 7th last season, I reckon if you did an honest assessment right now we would rate as the 6th best team in the Premier League. Credit is due for the fact that the club got some of its business done early but have the signings made so far really improved us? Toure and Mignolet are more or less direct replacements for Carra and Reina, but, perhaps significantly, they reduce the wage bill.

Aspas and Alberto are promising talents brought in relatively cheaply by today's standards, if they make it great but if they don't there is still an excellent chance the club will recover most of its outlay and perhaps make a decent profit. That seems like good business and there's nothing wrong with that as far as it goes, but the fact is the club hasn't actually spent any money so far. What has been spent on the incoming players has been more or less covered by the transfer fees of the outgoing players. Remember the smoke and mirrors I mentioned earlier?

But all of that is really good business if it plays out as Rodgers said recently that the early signings were to strengthen the squad, the next signings will be to strengthen the team. It is these "next signings" that are the most important in determining how serious the club is in challenging for a return to the top table of the Premier League, assuming of course that these "exciting signings" will materialize at all.

So far all we've heard about was that Armenian guy that we missed out on and to be honest I've got my doubts about how serious our attempt to sign him was. I mean it's very easy to say you were going to pay the £20+ million asking price when he's already gone elsewhere. Maybe I'm being a little too paranoid but I find it a little worrying that when the manager was asked about signings at the weekend he said there's nothing close at the moment but there's lots of work going on behind the scenes.

There's nothing close yet? FFS we are halfway through pre-season and about 5 weeks away from the new season, what are they waiting for? Could it be they are waiting for the Suarez money? If Suarez stays, will we actually sign anybody else? Can I fit any more question marks into this paragraph?

I just wonder if we end up selling Suarez for say £50 million will the club then go out and spend about £30million, bank the rest and tell everyone what a great job they are doing backing the manager. It just seems a little suspicious to me that the club can go out and make such early signings which would clearly have required a lot of planning before the last season even finished and now we've had this large gap where nothing has happened, and the manager says there is nothing close. It almost seems like they haven't actually planned on spending any money.

Of course all of these questions will no doubt be answered in the weeks ahead, but I'm a little worried. We need to spend money and bring in some quality if real progress is to be made this season. I'm not talking about players who come with the tagline, "prospect", "potential" or "highly rated", we've already got a squad full of those players.

I'm talking about players who have experience and have already proven themselves at a decent level. We need a blend of youth and experience, and we've certainly got the youth so it's high time to start working on the experience part of the equation. If such players arrive in the weeks ahead we'll be looking good but if not, then I'm afraid to say that it would appear the club's owners are not interested in building an empire, they seem to be building a salmon farm!
